I have 6 Rhode Island reds and just inherited 4 other hens, I have a two tier nesting box of 10 nest but I am worried that there won't be enough room over the winter for all the hens my coup is 5 ft wide and 12 ft long. Is this enough room for 10 chickens

I heard that you should allow 2-4square feet per chicken. You'll have 10 in a 60 square foot area. I think you should have more than enough room. Hope this helps. -Molly

It is true birds need 4sq ft per bird but that is like the bare minimum! Your sq footage is about 60ft if measurement are correct i would try to add a covered run or some additional room if you plan on keepung them cooped up and not free ranging. The tight spaces with nothing to do in winter might promote some pushy behaviors to come up. Hope this helps and good luck!

thank you so much, they have a hugh outdoor run under hugh evergreen trees and sandy soil but i was a bit concerned about the winter months. I do have room to extend the 5ft wall so we will see how that works. Thanks for all you help, much appreciated
