That sounds so reasonable! I guess I need more stuff in there besides just the dirt. The leaves etc...don't retain moisture and grow dampness on the ground

Chickens want to dig in forest duff, so deep bedding in the run makes them happy. Goodies to find digging around, softer landings, and no mud!

Yes I have come to the conclusion that I need to provide some sort of roof because otherwise whatever nice soft stuff I put in there is going to get all soggy and gross. Now...to hope the town doesn't notice it...

Our auxiliary run is uncovered and slopes a bit toward the woods behind our property. The forest floor effect does not wash away. So, if you pile it a bit, include a fence, it could stay in place. Of course, a roof is a great addition as it provides cover from predators, rain and snow. We are lucky to have the room and resources to do both.

but the ground of the run becomes pure mud after a big rain. What do you do about that?

If you don't have any particular drainage problems then plenty of dry organic material -- wood chips, wood shavings, pine straw, straw, fall leaves, etc. -- will absorb moisture and react with the poop to create a composting environment.
