Florence to ruin my Hatch!

What day of incubation are they on?
The problem with power outages will depend on what stage of incubation they are on.
The problem with the grill is the rain.
If you have the means to have a fire like a fireplace or wood stove, you can bake bricks for heat or heat water for hot water bottles. Bricks and rocks hold heat longer.
Move the broody to higher ground.

ChickenCanoe asks a good question - What day of incubation are you on?

I had a power outage when incubating, can't recall the day they were on, it was years ago .... I put the eggs pointy side down in an egg carton, left the lid open & stuck it in the top oven shelf with a bowl at the bottom & lite candle on the middle shelf, left the door cracked. Luckily for me it was but a few hours & they hatched.

Another idea is ... how do I put this :hmm Use body heat. If you can sit still for periods of time put them in an egg carton with pointy side down, between your thighs? Or have heard of women using their bras. It's a thought ....

I will be on day 13 if the storm comes my way when the weather gets here. Good news is that its heading far enough south to where I might not have much of a storm. I can grill in he rain on the carport, or even in one of he empy chicken coops. But its usually clear after a hurricane passes and I won't even be worried about food during the bad weather... Plenty of food in the fridge that has to be eaten before I need to cook eggs. South Carolina looks like it will be hit hard with the storm as it goes inland. These things change daily though.

I thought about doing warm water bottles using a grill but I won't have enough charcoal to keep a fire going forever and Replacing i would be an issue. If weather got bad and I lost power my resources would go towards feeding myself and neighbors over hatching eggs. I can attempt to move the broody hen but I do not see this particular hen cooperating. Just looking into the nesting box area to collect eggs from other chickens causes her to take of frantically. I have a better chance of hoping water levels stay low than hoping she would adjust to a move. I already contacted who I bought the eggs from and they said I can buy more. Small set back. those who send prayers send them to those on the coast near Wilmington NC, they need them far more than I do.

I'm near Greenville, SC, which is where a lot of evacuees from the coast have come. My bestie lives next door to me, and we darted out to do some grocery shopping yesterday, with a mind toward things that don't need to be cooked. Seems the stores are staying pretty stocked (at least the ones we were at), and they even have good stacks of bottled water. Since both she and I have chickens (she has LOTS more than I) we joked that if the power went out/food in fridges spoiled/etc., we can always have a firepit BBQ! ;D

Do you have any hothands?. Those little packets that keep your hands warm while camping? If you do, and power is only out for a little while, then it may help. I don't really know. I hope you are safe!

I have no hot hands not prepared for a power loss but I figure that means I need to put all my resources towards helping out people if the Path of the hurricane goes back towards me. right now I will on the outer edge and so far inland that it will be fading from Tropical Storm to Tropical Depression when it gets here. in the near future I am thinking of getting one of those battery cell surge protectors if they still exist so when the power goes out I have enough saved electricity to keep the Incubator running for a few days... and if its longer than a few days then a hatch is the least of my concerns.

I like the brick idea! And if you have any of those cheapie dollar store solar lights, make sure they are out to get charged. They make great light sources when the power goes out. As far as bringing your broody to high ground goes, my kids are convinced that we have an upstairs bathroom solely because it's a good place to lock up whatever critters need rescuing or rehabbing!

The Hurricane seems to sparing my part of the state, I guess things could change but I doubt I have a power outage. It was nice to see much of he advice to keep an incubator warm if I did lose power and might help someone else out. In the future I will likely be more prepared because of it. Thanks to everyone for contributing.
