brown millet this time of the year, grows very well ALL summer here

These crops birn out in our extreme summer heat: (Oct - March planting) whole wheat and oats over winter along with timothy and clover cover crop.

you can plant salad spreads too. They can even be made to go over bahia sod pieces so the grass can root but shoot up through the wire.

Because of CelticOaks' great advice, I'm proud to show our first crop of brown millet!

I'm growing it in pans because I am going to introduce it into the beds like you would lay down sod. I had to start it outside of the forage bed because the lower part of the bed box is in shadow and wouldn't get enough light to start healthy plants.

I'll post more pics of the bed once I get everything set up.

This is great! I just bought some millet and am starting the strouts tomorrow ...just can't decide what container and whether or not to use soil...any advice? There are 3 feed stores that i can think of locally in homestead/redlands, one in town and two out on Krome. They never have swaps, i was wondering what the response would be here if I
pushed them to try one. PM me if you would attend a swap in Homestead and if people would like to go i will see if i can persuade someone to have a swap?? you can PM me if you like
that way i can count replies easier..

thanks :)...

oh i just thought of another place also on krome and about 160st that may do it also.

I approached the store managers of some area feed stores. Tractor Supply said they would try one and see how it would go. It was a great success. On our first swap we had over 1500 people show up (including vendors and customers). Now we are having the swaps monthly. Other stores have seen our success and are holding swaps occasionally. Some of the stores have quit because of poor planning and not enough notice of when the store is holding a swap. A weeks notice isn't very good. People need advance notice so they can plan on a hatch or whatever. We do hold raffles sometimes for specific causes and have groups like the 4H or FFA hold fundraisers by selling hotdogs, hamburgs, drinks and such. We limit items vendors bring to farm related items. We do not want the swaps to be yard sales. Good luck and have fun...

Just use a good potting soil. I used Miracle Grow because it feeds for up to 6 months. The pans I used were old aluminum roasting pans. It took a full 7 days before I saw any sprouts - so don't give up! The location I chose in the pen was right against the fence and not very wide so that none of the birds could perch on it.

Thanks! Did you put holes in your pan to drain or just throw them in?
