Hey ya' ll I just had my first hawk attack. My little Dutch bantam hen was pinned down by said hawk. I dropped everything ran out and got her from hawk. She is injured in eye, comb head area. I gave her 1 cc of tylan and put her on my patio. What are her chances of survival? I'm crying since she is dear to my heart.

Any one down Miami area want to get some of my nn or Orps I have for sale?

I have a weekly ride down there for a while

Wow. Quick action on your part. Hope she makes it, keep us posted.

I found a vet in Tamarac, and Dr. Monk gave her an anti inflammatory and a pain med. I gave her the antibiotic. He said she should make it. He also said it was a coopers hawk that attacked her by the discription. It was worth my peace of mind to make the drive even if I had to put her down. I didn't want to have her suffer.

My Dutch bantam hen laid an egg once we arrived home from vet. She even began to eat. Now I need to observe her drinking to feel she is on her way to recovering from the hawk attack. I am going to make her a sun room chicken meaning she is officially living in the house. I will have to buy a parrot cage and make some modifications to accommodate her. Then she will need a couple of friends. Just updating the outcome.

Did the vet give you anything for the eye? I got an ointment that I had to put in ones eye. I have seen Red Tail Haws and Coopers Hawks and Sharp Shinned Hawks here. If there are Crows around they usually chase them away. We do have several Crows that hang out here. I do worry because I do let my birds out into the pasture and always think that one day one may get picked off by a hawk. I had some chicken being killed and I couldn't figure how the predator was getting into the pens as I have electric around them. I put up my game camera and discovered it was an owl killing my birds. The owl was getting into my end pen mostly. Early one morning an Owl got into the pen and attacked the birds. They were very bloody from their combs to there feet. A couple of the birds had very bloody combs. There was blood spatter inside the coop too. The birds were survivors. I cleaned them up the best I could and moved them to another coop and pen. The birds are Rose Comb Rhode Island Whites so the blood really showed up on the white feathers. The roosters comb healed good but one of the hens will always have a deformed comb because of the attack. I love these birds very much and I had been showing them at poultry shows. Even though I can't show these birds any more I now use them as breeders. I have shown some of their offspring at shows and have done quite well with them.
