My Pet Chicken

Can anyone in the Lutz, FL area adopt some baby chicks scheduled to be delivered today? There was a late cancellation. The 15 chicks total include 3 female Australorps, 4 female Barred Rocks, 3 female Golden Buffs, 3 female Rhode Island Reds, plus one male Barred Rock and one male Rhode Island Red. Please email facebook [at] mypetchicken.com if you are able to care for these babies.

I done some reading and I believe It will be ok if I keep my 4 week olds outside today its nice and sunny and coop protects from. The wind high is 45 degrees

The rural areas of West Palm Beach were quite cold and windy this morning at 5:30 am. My husband built the coop opening to face the west and yesterdays winds were coming out of the northwest. I took some of his tarps and hung them to help stop the full brunt of cold wind blowing through the coop. I have 2 hens and a roo that do not want to go inside and roost. They are 23 wks old and are my hatchlings from July. My 2 roos and 4 hens I guess keep them out since they sit on the door of the coop at night. What a jumble in the pecking order. If they would just go inside I could close the door. But noooo, I grab 1 and throw inside the coop while I grab the other the 1st one runs past me. Hope my babies don't get sick.

Anyone in the N.E part of Florida (preferably near Jacksonville) know a vet that sees chickens (hopefully at a really reasonable price) My Rooster has a nasty beak injury and I'm not sure if he will be able to survive it...almost all of his lower beak is gone. If anyone knows of one I would really appreciate the info Thanks!

It is cold, but it's about 10 degrees warmer than the weathermen predicted, thank goodness!

Did everybody make it through the first blast? another coming tonight then according to weatherman - 70's and above for rest of week.

Checked on mine this morning, gave some warm water, cracked corn and sweet feed, more hay in the enclosed coop, they don't use except to occasionally lay egg.
One of my pullets looks like frostbitten nose, rooster just barely along top of comb, rest look fine, running around a bit more than usual but the sun gets to their enclosure before 9 am

We just moved last year from IL to Central Florida. My hometown is experiencing -20 weather plus a huge blizzard that shut down most of the town. I'm SO glad I moved to Florida, ha. I'll take the couple days of colder weather over that!!!!

Can I get some suggestions on what to use to build an enclosed run? We have a huge secure pen built for my ducks to bed down in at night, and we are wanting to build a run for them to have during the day. It has to be enclosed per FWC. We are going to use bird netting to cover the top....but I'm trying to cut down on cost as we spent a lot of money making sure their nighttime pen was predator proof. We have dogs that stay out during the day so I am not worried about being so stickler with the run since the dogs will protect them.....I want it to be 6 or 7 foot tall. Any cheap ideas besides chicken wire? I really hate chicken wire....
2" chicken hex net not too pricey, and so long as they are not very small...
I have shade cloth like you see around tennis courts, not 7 feet tall longer that it is tall unless you run strips like on a pie crossway over the top (start at ground level then toss over frame and secure on other side ground level, repeat until length of enclosure covered) would entail cutting down and would still need some sort of support frame, I'm thinking pvc, not too expensive and easy to find at home improvement store. Old tarp from dump truck is like a sunscreen, and tight mesh for walls (as is shade cloth idea)
tight enough mesh on these to keep them in as well as allowing some sunlight to get through, yet protected from full strength of sun's rays. I have it over wire for shade during summer, some help in cold weather as well. I hope that explanation wasn't "clear as mud" Best of luck

All of my birds looked fine today. Everyone ready for tonight? Not supposed to be as cold but still down in the upper 20's here tonight. I have 2 open coops that are great in the summer but I closed them up and put tarps over the open side at least to keep the wind from blowing on the birds but there is still plenty of ventilation in all of the coops.

So far everyone looked good (except my poor rooster's injury

) There was about an inch/ inch and a half in their water bowl first thing so had to dump that ( I thought it was worse at first til I dumped it ) They were all very happy to be scratching around in the sunshine despite the cold this morning. I'm glad tonight is supposed to be a bit milder though.

Hi to fellow Floridians. Was in St Pete, am moving to Zephyrhills hopefully soon.

Very near to 301. I have been looking around and don't see many coops. So I thought I would ask the wonderful folks on here. What are the predators I need to watch out for and what is the best coop design? Right now, my girls free range and go in their coops at night. I have neighbors on both sides but empty land (a churchyard) at the back. There is not much they have to watch out for except a hawk which doesn't have room to swoop in (but does love to sit on the fence).

In Zephyr, we will be very near the state park. What have you found as the most effective coop design for the area?

Thanks for your help!
