So far no eggs yet I only have one old enough to lay ( A RIR 6.5 months) and Im pretty sure its a rooster...or a mean/confused/loud mother clucker. I Have five others- All Americanas only 3.5-4 months old...I should start getting eggs soon..at least I hope.
P.S> I have a husband, son, and dog (male) so Im trying to even out the male to female ratio in my household

Fellow Floridians, So I am pretty new to back yard chickens.... like 3-4 weeks new :) So, my question is about rain. We had our first big day time thunderstorm yesterday with the chicks outside in the coop/run. They are about 5 weeks old now we estimate. They were in the run area, but looked pretty dry still b/c of the way the roof is built, it seemed all the water was being directed away well.

But I was concerned about the little Silkie since I read they are more susceptible to being cold b/c of their feather type. Anyhow, I put all 3 of them up in the coop where they would be very dry. They really didn't want to go, then they all turned around and made their way back down the ramp into the run area again. They stayed in the run until dark. I guess my question is: do most chickens want to be in the coop during the rain? Is it not a big deal where they are?

I had to "train" them to use the ramp, so I am not sure if I have to show them to get out of the rain too. Or if its not a big deal at all? Thanks for the input :)
I'm not sure about the silkie, but the others should have enough feathers to be okay. I have seven two-week old chicks that have been outside in the yard with their broody mama since four days old. Such a different experience using a hen to raise the chicks! Although if they get too cold they have mama hen to warm them up, but they love the rain! I can't get them to go in , even when it was pouring yesterday, and one little cockerel is still a fuzzy chick. Hope your babies are okay!

I can't remember if it was a tropical storm or one of those non event hurricanes, but the coop flooded and NONE of the chickens went inside. so my daughter and i
in the middle of the rain went out and collected them and put them in a dog cage on the patio.. they were getting close to floating away, the water was approx 6"
deep in the run already.. anyway, they were adults so i think the moral of the story is that they generally don't seem to bother to go inside when it rains..

PS: at 5 weeks i think it would be good to get them out of the rain, were you in the tornado that was seen in Doral yesterday, I couldn't get home because of the flooding.

Third baby did not hatch. But here's a pic I caught of the Sumatra with one of her new babies and the other is under her. Of coarse she decided to go broody under some round pen panels leaning against the barn. Quite a safe spot though but what fun I had making it "baby" proof so they can't escape and get lost or eaten by anything.
