depends on the areasHi, New to this group. I have the chance to move to Jacksonville in a couple of weeks and was wondering how friendly the people are there with regards to chickens? I just placed my egg to hatch to pullets girls so would like to start hatching again within the next few months.

I am not sure how to reply directly to you SahWithChciks… I did it through the "thumbs up" icon… but that doesn't seem right so I am trying this part, too!
I live in Chiefland, You're right about the feathering at different rates…It's amazing how "feathered" my "mutt" chick is as compared to the Cochins and they all hatched on the same day. I will keep them inside for another week or two. They have been no problem thus far. My run will be made with chain link buried a foot deep. It should make my run 3' high. I live near woods… and I know there are many predators… I am scared to death my babies will get eaten. The coop is near the house, but the dog sleeps inside, so I doubt she'll be of any help. Who knew I'd love these little birds so much?
In Duval county you have to have a permit, they only issue 300, and all of them have been issued. They are talking about possibly opening up more permits. The permit is for hens only, with a max of five birds. If you live in an area zoned rural it wouldn't apply, and you can have as many birds as you want. the permits only apply to residential neighborhoods. St. John's county and Clay county both have laxer laws, but I don't know the specifics. How about areas that are NOT friendly toward chickens. I was reading that you have to have a permit? Is that right?

Here's the ordinance if you care to read it: It's $5 for the chicken keeping course, $25 for the permit. As mentioned by Abserbean, only 300 permits were issued because it's a pilot program. It was initially intended to sunset in 18 months if the city council so desired at that time. However, it has been a complete success without any complaints and it looks like the powers to be might open it up sooner....hopefully. You can go to "Hens in Jax" or "River City Chicks" (River City Chicks would be your better choice,) on Facebook for any updated information.Hi, New to this group.
