Fun is chasing a terrified four-week-old chicken around the garage while you try to catch her to get her back home. NOT.

Or, the brooder needs a lid. Right now they have a makeshit one because all I had in the garage was the screen from the window the A/C unit is in, and tomorrow when I can get out to the shed I’ll make them a proper chicken-wire lid.

Hello! I've been in and out of the intro sections a bit, but finally made my way over here. We are in Archer, near Gainesville.

Currently we have about 40 chicks, hoping for four separate coops. We have 12 Black Austrolorps, 10 Silver Laced Wyandottes, 9 Buff Orpingtons, 6 Dominiques, 2 Gold Laced Wyandottes, 2 Salmon Favorelles, and 1 Blue Laced Red Wyandotte. Some weird numbers, I know! We ordered the BO, SLW, GLW, and BLRW along with some Columbian Wyandottes from McMurray, but the posts office had a bit of a disaster so we picked up some local replacements when we lost 32/46 shipped chicks.

So we have the BAs from the feed store, and we found a local hatchery with great birds where we got the extra SLW, Dominiques, and SF, and that is where we will be buying our chicks from now on (other than some replacement Columbian Wyandottes from McMurray as those aren't available from what I've seen locally).

We are working on a mostly organic method of raising, and depending on our finances in a few years after our pasture can be certified organic, we may get certified for our chickens (and other livestock!). It's a bit of a controversial subject, though, so I don't want to get into it too much.

Just wanted to drop in and say hello! :)

LOL

@Bean789: They may be a little far for you, since they are in Newberry, but it's called Double D hatchery. They have some amazing looking birds and lines, and he participates in NPIP.

I'm not partial to any variety of chicken, I'm just into heritage breeds that do well as dual purpose. :) Hopefully this will suit the bill! We are already falling victim to chicken math....

Near Tampa and looking for a cream legbar chick or pullet and a muscovy hen (young) or a hinny. Now, if you happen to have either of those or both and also have a brahma and a barred Rock you would make my week, if not month! ;-)

Thanks for the info. I'll look them up. Occasionally I travel north to Gainesville so maybe I will check them out on my next trip.

@Bean789 : His pick up days are always at the start of the week after 5pm. He hatches on Sunday mostly, but it usually bleeds over to Monday. Well worth the drive for the quality of his birds, though.
