FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

I'm curious, I read that cedar shavings were toxic to chicks. I use cedar essential oil in soap and know that some people are very sensitive to it - thoughts on using cedar in the coop with adult chickens?

There seems to be an ongoing debate about the toxicity of cedar chips and chickens. I would agree with the argement that extremely strong smelling chips (of any kind, even pine) in an enclosed coop can cause respiratory problems. I don't do chicks, but I can only imagine that it would be hard for them to breathe if taking straight cedar chips, right from the bag and into their area. In my case, I'm allergic to pine, so both bags are treated the same. Once I glove up, I open the bags and allow them to breathe. Since I don't have an enclosed coop, it's easier for the fumes to dissipate quicker. I keep my mixed bedding in a 10 gallon can. I put a solid layer of cedar on the bottom, let it air out while I do other chores around the chicken yard, and then fill the rest of the way with pine. Air it out again, sprinkle with a good dose of DE, and then stir it all up to mix together. I clean the coop first thing in the morning, so when additional bedding is needed, it has all day to air out before the hens go back in the coop to roost. When I do the afternoon and evening trips out, I stir all the shavings again. Between all the stirring up, generally by the end of the first day, the fumes have fizzled out for the most part. When it's freshly stirred, you can get a whiff, but that's why I do it, so the smells dissipate. I can't breathe them because of allergies and it just makes sense to me that they would be too strong for the chickens.

Anyway, all the chickens appear healthy and happy and there's no bugs to be found around or on the chickens. I try to keep it as natural as possible. Between the apple cider vinegar, DE, and cedar shavings, I haven't found a single parasite. I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. It's working for me. Others may choose differently.

I have 2 SS in my mixed flock and love them! They are the sweetest natured birds I have and so pretty. My girls will be 2 in April and they lay decent sized eggs about 5 days out of 7. They're just completing their first real molt and did seem to lose more feathers than my other breeds but their new feathers have more specks than the ones they lost so it's been fun watching them come back in. Because they are such mild-tempered birds, they are on the bottom of the pecking order in my flock but they know how to duck & run (they don't seem to ever fight back). Plus they are excellent foragers, I've seen the other birds watch the SS find "treasures" and run over to take over wherever the SS were scratching.

Here's a picture of Peanut, one of our SS:

And here is Dia:

These pictures were taken before this last molt, I need to get some new photos to compare their markings to pre-molt.

I hope you enjoy your SS as much as I have mine!
They are so pretty! I am so so so excited to get our chicks ... for the longest time the barred rock was my favorite, hands down ... now I'm not so sure ... the SSes are soooo pretty and seem like such sweethearts ... I'm thinking the BR gals now have a run for their money with the SSes in my heart. Arg ... but I have no chickens yet ... so lonely for chicks!

I'll let Peanut and Dia know you complimented them, they'll be pleased

Actually, the photos don't do them justice. When the sun hits that dark mahogany, they get glints of beetle green.

You'll love them, all of them! They are each different in their own funny little ways.

I'm so ridiculously excited to finally get our chicks I can't stand it!

Hi
I am in Pensacola with two one year old hens!

Welcome! I live in Molino. What kind of hens do you have? I have 32 hens of all kinds and 1 rooster. The rooster is a Buff Laced Polish freebie I got from McMurray's Hatchery. He's very docile and great with the ladies. My hens are RIR, NHR, EE, White and brown leghorns, Buff Orphintons, Black Minorcas, Australorps, and a Buff Brahma as well as silver laced wyndottes. My egg cartons (I get about 24 eggs a day) look like Easter Egg cartons!
