My auto correct just doesn't get "pullets" and heaven forbid if you have Bielefelders!

Hey folks. It seems there's a consensus on the forums (but not 100%) that you should NOT feed roosters/cockerels layer feed. I had a hen, new to layin,g lay a soft egg this morning. They are not eating the oyster shells so I assume that they think they don't need more calcium but i'm buying a new bag of feed today and don't want to harm my roo or mal-nourish my hens. Should I get layer and not be concerned about my roo or get normal feed and just continue to offer the shellss; chalk up the soft egg to deformed egg/problem that just happens?

Just finished my coop in rainy Pensacola Florida! Was given 3 pullets yesterday. I joined a couple years ago when I built my mother a coop. Finally had time to build my own!

I've identified two of the three but can any of my fellow Floridians confirm this is a exchequer leghorn (or something else)?

My boys have always eaten the same feed as my girls. Never had any problems. If the girls aren't taking the oyster shells I wouldn't be concerned. Are their shells weak? Every once in awhile I'll get a soft shell egg, but it is rare. I feed my birds a high protein grower and Game Bird breeder feed (20 / 21%). Their feathers are nice and shiny. The birds have good weight to them. I show my birds at poultry shows and I want the best possible. I have won some champions with my birds. Also this is my hatching time of year and I also want the healthiest chicks. This is just what I do.

CMOM,

It's only been ONE egg and it was her 3rd egg layed. Not real concerned about the one egg thing. I was more questioning hi protein laying feed having a roo in the mix vs standard chicken feed and free for all oyster shell.

You're answer was great (as usual). thx

I just do with the best with results I have had with my birds. Often people ask me what I put on my birds to make their feathers so shiny, I tell them just like people you are what you eat. I have 15 males and 40# feeders in each of the coops. I'm not looking to save a few bucks on feed for my birds, I want them to be as healthy as possible..
