My dom girl Rawr did that last week!!! wasn't sure if it was the poisonous ones so i freaked as she grabbed it but have you seen The avengers movie? That moment when The Hulk smashed Loki into the ground?.. That was exactly what she did. after they ate it i scooped her up to make sure it didn't bite her! Chickens are beast!

Ugh I cannot stand spiders. I have awful barn spiders they are not wolf or jumpers or whatever just hideous great big things that spin jump from the top of the barn to the bottom and leave their web exactly where I need to walk through to get to the light switch . . .
Chickens will eat - chicken. And ham, and turkey. They are mini-raptors! You would not want a giant chicken walking into your backyard they would smash you up and eat you, too! I just wish they would eat flies!

Nikkieblue, I make ice in an old dog bowl, throw in some mealworms, veggies, whatever I have on hand. I take one bowl out of the freezer in the morning and put it in the shade. Change them out everyday. I also fill their coop waterer with ice cubes every day. Mine stay in the shade and take dust baths most of the hottest part of the day.

I'm hoping they get that pesky snake that keeps hanging around. It was about a Foot from the coop this afternoon when I went to let one of the chicks free range...needless to say that chick went straight back to the brooder.

Snakes are smart. They also have the best sense of smell. Someone is going to have to move that snake or it is going to get a chick/chicken.

That's what I'm afraid of. I used moth balls in the backside of the fence but he just sits between them and watches the chickens

My 12 week old ladies found a snake today! They seriously thought about eating it- until it lunged at Saga, my EE (far left). She ba-gawked and went straight up and back! I panicked and grabbed the shovel . . . .
Now I know it was a mostly harmless black racer and not a definitely dangerous water moccasin. We have both and I can't always tell the difference.

We lost one of the flock tonight. Our 4 year old son unknowingly to us went out to get his little chick and one of our Buff Orpingtons must have managed to sqeeze out when the gate was opened. She was swiftly mangled by the Jack Russell and my son was screaming, crying, and simply hysterical. I got the dog away but the damage had been done. A broken neck, a large hole in her back, and just the saddest look on her face when I picked up her lifeless body. Our son has officially learned a life lesson in death. He said his tearful love yous, miss yous, and good byes as we had him help us wrap her up and pick a box for her. At least she had a great afternoon getting loved on and hand fed mealworms. Burried her deep in the run so she can still be with her friends. Getting a different lock tommorrow so our son can't get in himself again. R.I.P. Little Red Hot.
