Last week was just craziness around here! I was worried it would get like that again, but all we got was rain and a chilly morning.

I hope everyone's gardens survive! I didn't plant one this spring, but I will once the chickens are penned into their new aviary. I just have one tomato plant that has gone completely feral and a pepper plant. The chickens seem to leave those alone.

lucky you that chicks don't like your tomatoes. Had to fence mine to keep them out. Tomatoes and crepe myrtle flowers are their favor food. Also, if it is green they attach. So much fun to watch.

WOW! I'm IMPRESSED! I thought I was getting things planted early, but you beat me! I am a flower gardener and have raised beds for most of my plants. I use the pine shavings from my coops (fertilizer included) to mulch my beds. Earlier this season an unknown volunteer popped up in my largest flower bed. I left it to see what the leaves looked like. I am pretty sure it's a squash (or zucchini). Well it is taking over the whole bed! The leaves are 12" across!!!!!! OMG! It's growing so fast I think I could watch it move! I nicknamed it "Kudzu". Well, I couldn't let it crowd out the flowers already planted, and I couldn't just pull it up....it actually has little 1" fruit on it (Awwwww). So I took a piece of flexible PVC and made a half circle arch with vertical wires to hold it in place and trained this monster up the wires. I should not claim I "trained" it.....It already knew the way! Within just a matter of days it's reached the top of the arch (5 ft high) and is working on covering the entire thing. Everyone wins. Flowers get sunshine, squash gets more sun, I get to harvest standing up (yea). The leaves and stems are very prickly. Would it be a good idea to feed the leaves to my silkies?

Stay tuned for more updates. If it reaches the house and wants to come in, I'm getting the Roundup!

Math Ace! For pete's sake how could you forget to mention the tomatoes!!! They are the most important plants out there! Hee hee! I love tomatoes! Sounds like you have a bunch. Hope your garden held out all right. We need rain but that was harsh!
We had a few branches down here. Small ones. And we live in a town house, so no damage.
My husband and I are looking at houses for today. It's the first day of looking I'm so nervous about the residential rural and ag zoning thing. I want tons of chickens.

Isn't it awesome that of pets helep with our gardens? We have about 30 different heritage tomatoes frowing and blooming (some have tiny fruits), zucchini, crookneck , butternut and acorn squash all blooming with babies, various hot peppers, chard, boc choy, beets, onions, potatoes, eggplant, peas, okra, and numberous herbs all happlily growing. Thanks girls.

New to BYC. I live in Palmetto, Fl looking for a good place to talk with other people that raise chickens. Thinking I might have found a good place here. I am new to raising chickens but my girl friend and I started off pretty big for us. We have 27 chickens ranging from around 3 months to 3 weeks.
thank you for reading

Hi Philip!
welcome-byc.gif
that is a lot of chickens, but I bet they provide lots of entertainment too. Glad to see you found the FL thread.

is this the right area to find help with figuring out what breeds I have? I bought 9 chcikens from a lady that had no idea what she had. Told me some where RIR but the older they get I dont think they are. I also have a few that I am starting to wonder if they are roos instead of hens.
