Carol, so glad the girls settled in, hope everyone gets back on a laying schedule soon for you. I have molting RiR hen, one broody here now lol. We have decided to clean house more of brown layers, the Orpingtons are great hens, but lay brown so I wont be adding more of them. The little hens are being placed as well to make room for more colr egg layers.
Currently have 11 EE eggs from a BYC'r who has a beautiful flock of hens covered by an Arucana roo set to hatch next week. Another collection of EE\\Arucana eggs coming in to hatch, and a slew of call duk eggs sitting on the counter waiting to go in as well. Oh and around 60 quail due to come the end of April.
Started the first perm flight pen last weekend which is 12x12, it will have 2 more attached to it, one 12x12 running east to west (current one runs north to south) with a rounded front pen connecting the two. The hens are getting a new pen as well that will cover where they ar now plus wrap around the side of our coop giving them an extra 12x12 space ontop of the 12x4(16) they have now. Then we have to build the quail pen across the yard since they cant live along side the chickens and DH says he wants it similar to the others so 6' tall 4x4 posts with the pen being 14'x 5'(6') when done.
Come fall we will house silver wood ducks, mandarin ducks, call ducks in various colors, rouen ducks, plus our laying flock of hens and flight pen of quail.
I will be on the hunt for pine bows for the silver wood duck and mandarin pens as they like the ability to hide. Maybe cedar as it doesn't hurt them.
