Hey KAH- the reason why we live in The City of Melbourne is b/c they allow chickens. The reason why I did not like Suntree/Viera is because... well, there are lots of reasons. For one, it looks like the fertilizer capitol of the world with all that grass so green it's practically blue & professional landscaping. For two, the WHOLE CITY is under ONE BIG UMBRELLA HOA... hence all the stuffy old people and professional families living in that area. It's a great area- zoo, lots of restaurants, etc... & GREAT SCHOOLS BUT ... it wasn't for me. Sounds like you must have some LAND if you have sixty chickens, though... Shame you can't utilize your land, just keep your grass cut & weeded or the city will post a note on your door.

If you need to get rid of any of your chickens, my neighbor has a few Rhode Island Reds who have just started to lay & she wants about 3 more to integrate into her flock. After getting rid of her Pullet named Lady Gaga who turned out to be a Roo, she's devastated & wants to "replace" him.

Anyway.... let me know what you have "for sale."

oh wait, now i'm all confused. FL chickens- what is your "for sale" list?

& KAH- contact CITY HALL! Got my chicken permit. It says up to five hens, NO ROOSTERS. I am really bad at math, though! I can't count. Anyway, this rule only applies to The City of Melbourne & it says outdoors, so I feel like potentially I could have another dozen living in my house (lol) anyway, this rule does not apply to.... Palm Bay, not West Melbourne, Cocoa, Titusville, or Suntree/Viagra ... I mean Viera. Or anywhere else in Brevard. Everywhere has their own rules on poultry & when I was researching it would seem that you need a FULL ACRE to have any kind of livestock at all... EVEN BEES!.... our first house bid was in Malabar... 1.25 acres & a barn w/ electricity. That would have been so cool.... but I am so much happier living close to things & in a 1950's home. Those are the best, in my opinion. Anyway, GOOD LUCK. Rules are annoying, and unfortunately you chose a city that has MORE RULES than most.

I've been steading about the butchering thing and I know what you wrote is true. Let's just say I'll have to work up to all that. That was another subject DH and I were talking about the other day - the fact/necessity of me knowing all aspects of our homesteading/lil farm. I was reading about butchering chickens here and someone mentioned having the process down to 12 minutes to do a bunch. It's a goal certainly.

Happy to tell you guys that I'm on my way out to pick up a milking cow, she gave birth 10 days ago but the calf died, the owner wanted to dry her up but I want the milk so

But Shellie, your list is long & tempting... do you have any older ones for sale? Think.... somewhere in the 4-8 month range for my neighbor? Her Rhode Islands are HUGE, around 6 months & I think she'd like to integrate similar aged hens... plus, I think she swore-off raising them after having to get rid of her beloved Lady Gaga Rooster who was a "sexed female." Hey... they got most of them sexed right! It's not an exact science. LOL!
