After talking to folks on this thread and the 'predator' thread i have decided not to move my beloved girls to Fla.

I think they would be happier to live their lives in a similar fashion to what they already know. Trying to haul them all the way to Fla would be way stressful for them (and me), so when the time comes, I am going to rehome them w/ friends.

I did, however, have an idea (about evacuating chickens from the island

) after looking at some unique coops. This idea may be fatally flawed, but tell me what you think. I saw a coop on BYC made out of an old camper. For just a few hens, a small camper could be pulled off island and contain them inside for awhile, then driven back home when allowed to return! Camper + hurricane force winds = ? (probably a disaster.) I guess the question is, can a small camper be anchored to withstand strong winds? Is is possible to make such a thing work? Not saying I am going to even try.

I think I need to live at least a full year (and through one real evauation) of island life before I throw animals into the mix. Thank goodness hurricanes and evacuations don't happen EVERY year!

Thanks to everyone for the information and advice- this has been a real learning experience! I grew up in the south (Alabama) moved to (coastal) Maine then to Idaho. Can't wait (fingers crossed) for the next part of the journey to happen!

(Off topic) Our family is also into geocaching, so if any of you geocaching, chicken lovin' folks are venturing to SE Idaho in the near future look us up, we love to meet new folks!
