Busy weekend! To start with, Friday we got a call about a couple pullets that needed to be re-homed quickly. Ultimately I said yes, and my kids were thrilled to welcome a friendly little bantam Cochin and EE to our brood (they're in quarantine, though, just in case). The very next morning the Cochin we'd named Rosemary crowed! I guess that's the real reason they needed a new home. Like a friend of mine always says: no good deed goes unpunished! Trust me, I didn't really "need" another rooster.
We'll find a way to make it work, though. I heard Juan and Floridachicken were looking for a good rooster....
Saturday and Sunday we cleaned everything top to bottom and brought in a pick-up load of coarse sand to fill the pens. The flooding this summer really took a toll on my property, so this was very much needed. We brought the 10x10 and 8x6 runs up by at least six inches, so the next time it rains I hope they'll stay high and dry. Of course the chickens love it - lots of scratching and dust bathing going on. We took turns standing guard as our feathered friends free-ranged while we worked; it's fun to see them run around like kids at recess.
Floridachicken: you had asked about my six year old Turken hen who still lays? We have a geriatric pen with four roosters and four hens that are all at least six years old. The girls lay eggs off and on, and they're even fertile occasionally. One of our Orpingtons is so old she sometimes gets knocked over and can't get up until we help her (we joke that she needs Life Alert), but she still goes in the nesting box and leaves us a lumpy looking egg with a rough shell...tastes fine, though, and we appreciate her effort!
The weather was so fabulous we even decided to trim the Arica palms, as I figured that'd give the mosquitoes less places to hide...maybe I'll just sleep in tomorrow.
