FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

HI!! i need some help ive never had chicks this young(there a week old) that needed a light....its hot here in middleburg like 100 degrees there in the shade with the light on. Do i need the light won its this hot outside srry if i wasent spose to post questions in this forum...i just needed a floridans Opinion!! thanx and hurry please i dont want to over heat/freeze them to death

Are you saying they are outside. Watch them I still have a light on in my brooders during the day but they are inside. I would put it on at night. Chicks even a week old need warmth at least 90 degrees. If they are huddling they are cold even in this heat. I do have some older chicks in my brooder house without a light but they are at least 3 weeks old and again they are inside the brooder house so it is very warm in there. Welcome to the forum you have one of the most knowledgeable people right near you chickenzoo (Jen) I know she would help you if you need it.

I keep my brooder boxes on the patio and only put on the light at night. It is so doggone hot that they are perfectly fine without it during the day. It actually could make them too hot and they could die. Watch their behavior, if they act cold then give them more heat. They are probably instead donning little swim suits and swimming in their water dishes.

As for an incubator, try contacting your local 4-H (check with your County Extension Office). Ours has incubators they lend to schools, maybe they'll let you use one now that everyone is on summer break.

It is soooo hot here! If I had chicks outside I would not keep a heat lamp on. I know our local chicken farmer only keeps the heat lamp on them outside for the first two weeks, but that was in April! Now it is so hot it feels like you are walking into an oven when you step outside.

Thanks for the suggestion sunny side up!! I just did that this afternoon after someone on my homeschool list recommended it. Had no idea that was available! I will be talking with them tomorrow I hope. Now to find some local free range eggs... The farmers market is closed until October and the lady I get my eggs from is in Christmas. Her eggs are awesome though and I may just drive to get them.

Thanx for all the help

Hey Florida!

I have 5 BLR Bantam Wyandotte splash cockerels I DESPERATELY need to place. As many know, I'm moving and can't take these guys with me. I'll give them free to a youth and I'm asking a nominal donation from anyone else (just trying to recoup my initial purchase at this point on them), if anyone else wants them. They are gorgeous, healthy and not aggressive. They are almost full grown. And I am NPIP tested. These boys will qualify for 4-H/FFA age requirements for the 2011 fairs.

I also have a very nice young adult trio of BLACK SILKIES that are Bobbi Porto bred, that I won't be taking with me. I have $75 into them. Would sell them for much less to a FL BYC member. These too have to go ASAP.

Just the last of what I have to get rid of before my move, and I am already way past my deadline.

Anyone looking for 2 miniature horses? I have two of the best, that also need to find a new home because I can't take them to MN with me. I'd let them go for half of what I have into them.

And if anyone would consider opening their home/ranch/farm up to a young adult cat, I have those too. I've called all over my area within a 2 hour drive, and no shelter (no kill) is able to take them. They are all cats that have been dumped here on me.

If you can help me out with any of the above, I'd be grateful! Please pass the word around for me. I was supposed to be in MN already, ugh!

Thanks,
Julie

Hey Micki want some mini horses? Don't tell your husband! LOL

If you can't find homes for the birds I'll take them and donate them for the 4-H club here. Good kids, I met some of them at the poultry fanciers meeting. Wyandottes are popular show birds here i've noticed. I'd love to have those silkies but my pockets are empty ATM until I start at my new job.

As for the cats have you contacted safe harbor in palm beach county? I'm full up on cats myself or I would take them but I'll ask around.
