FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Living in Florida with free ranging flocks where wild birds are on and off the properties makes everyone that has birds at risk for this unfortunately. I can't imagine that you would cull all of your beautiful birds if you had a handful of babies that were sick with a terrible but very common infection.

Jess, I didn't say cull all of your birds. I said cull the chicks and unwanted roosters. Clean everything and start again. We cull birds here and I don't think twice about it. Unwanted roosters are the first to go.

As you stated it is a risk of free range flocks, but steps can be taken to keep everyone healthy too. Culling happens to be part of the process sometimes. Also dry living quarters as mentioned above by someone else, and no over crowding too.

You said you can't sell them while they are sick, but are cramped for space, so I was suggesting culling as an option to reduce numbers, lessen the number you need to house and treat.

I am a believer in you can't save them all, and not all are worth saving. We have also greatly reduced the chicken numbers here because ducks and geese are far easier on a yard (don't dig it to a barren bald spot) and are less septable to disease too. The chickens we have kept are culled heavily to remove not to standard, or other unwanted qualities. Plus duck eggs are much better for baking with.

This cocci is going to kill me along with so many babies :( Does anyone near me know of a feed store that has corid? I used Sulmet and can't find corid. Called 3 stores and went to TSC and THEY didn't have any..

Frustrated...

Also, I have a lovely black silkie that seems to be a boy. Pretty bearded fella.. leg feathering not good but let me know if you want him.. free.. 4 months old
The TSC in East Orlando near SR 50 and Chuluota Road has Corid. I just bought some there at the weekend. Good luck.

Is there a listing anywhere of FL breeders? I have two 3-year-old hens (BO and BR) - my EE just passed away :( and I'd like to add two more hens to my flock - giving me 4 girls. The problem is, I can't find anywhere to buy just 2 females. I've been on CL but there are some scary-looking living conditions in the photos.... I've searched on FB and BYC and I'm not finding anyone selling pullets or sexed chicks. Maybe I'm just not being patient - I told myself I'd wait until Fall before getting serious about adding 2 more to my tiny little flock, but I've already started the search and I feel like I'm coming up empty.

I kind of recall there being some local chicken breeders, but I googled it and came up empty - again.

Anyone know where in Central FL (I'm in Seminole County) I can find a reputable chicken breeder? I want my girls primarily as pets, and then for laying... I can't have roo's where I live. I'd love a showgirl or a polish - just something with some pizzazz - LOL. But I'm up for any breed that's pretty and friendly (since we cuddle with our chickens too).

If you've got any advice for me, LMK! thanks so much!!!!!

If you're on FB there are some groups that might help. What breed are you looking for? EEs? If you're not on FB, I can look for you and let you know what I find and you can take it from there.

Thx anderson8505 - I'm on FB and I'm a member of the chicken swap group and I just requested the kickin chicken group. Thx!!

I'll be honest - I'm not sure picky about the type. I like pretty hens - LOL - like that? I want a breed that's friendly and nice to look at and will be a decent layer. I mentioned that I'd even be up for one of them being a showgirl, even though I know they're not the best layers, but they are so darned cute to look at! I don't show the hens and don't ever want more than four total. My two just seem a little lonely since my EE is gone and I have room for a couple more and I figured I'd take 2 more on board. Only being able to take 2 means I either have to wait until next Spring when the local farm stores get sexed chicks in (so I can have a much better chance I'm getting females) or I have to luck out and find someone selling some pullets locally. Not that I'm a fan of the big hatcheries, but since I can only take 2 birds, I can't order online from any of the big companies.... I suppose I should just be patient. Thanks so much!!!

Hi,
On the 23rd The Pampered Pullets Farm (Ocala) is having a swap. They normally have a big turn out. I am going, I try to go to all of them. I think people will have some sex-links, Brahmas, turkeys, and lots more. I always bring something home from Le and Erics place. I also stock up on any supplies that I need at their poultry shop. I already called in my order for Rx's. and some auto. poultry waters. To me it is so worth the drive to Ocala from Clermont.

Maye
