FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

I live in St. Johns but my job is mobile and I am in that area several times a week.  It is funny to think of chickens in such an urban area. You don't want your chickens to cross any of those roads!.  Lol.  They would never make it to the other side!

Your right it is funny and my neighbor in back of me is having a tantrum about it but because we live in rural orange park there is not a darn thing she can do, when we first moved into our house about 18 months ago we had a bonfire in the backyard, not a big one we built a firepit, she and her husband started screaming over the fence that we can't have fires and she was going to call the Orange Park police and we told her go ahead cause OP police will not even come here she would have to call clay county sheriff since we did not live within city limits and since we do not live within city limits bonfires are allowed, then she called about my husband building a greenhouse which he put on skids so it is not considered permanent but a moveable structure just like a shed without a foundation or tie downs, tonight it was the chicken coops, well I knew I would run into this problem with her so I already had the county laws printed up and highlighted for her and when started screaming over the fence line I handed them to her. She called animal control and the sheriff and they confirmed I am within my rights and if she wanted to live by OP city laws that she should move within the city limits. I think she almost had a heart attack when I informed her we were getting a shed with guest quarters attached and putting in the back of our lot. See I used to be on facebook all the time and played FarmVille for a couple of years and got tired of cyber farms that got me nowhere and stopped wasting my time on cyber games and started playing FarmVille on my property now if only there was some way to sell off the chickens to buy the foreclosure next door to us I could double my farm by a 100%. Lol but we only have a .25 lot and with all my gardens, dog runs, and chickens coops and sheds you would think we have a couple of acres. We could do a BBQ slash pool party bonfire at my house and laugh at the neighbors! I know it sounds like I am a trouble maker and I am not however she got on the wrong side of me complaining about a small fire that my husband and I were enjoying quietly.;)

omg a bbq would be fun! my neighbor has actually managed to sneak in 2 mini ponies(not sure if you have kids ) :) they have button quail too. so cute! I'm on FB as Kathy Erickson Riera if you bother with FB. :) we have TONS of deer. In fact this year I started putting out corn again because they had a munch fest on my porch plants and that's a no no to me lol. I have my FB privacy on super tight, but I'll take it down for a day or two if you wanna find us there. We have great neighbors, and spritzers and beer and sweet tea are always fun on the back decks :)

I know that the DE only has to be food grade not like the kind you put in pool filters, the difference is the size of the crystals. Food grade is milled to a dust. I use it for the coops, dog kennels, add it to the cat, chicken, and dog food, to help control internal parasites. Also use it topically on all of the above for fleas, ticks, mites, I dust the animals with it. Just make sure when you use it in runs, kennels, and coops to get all the damp dark areas that fleas ticks and mites like to hide. It was the only thing that worked when we got a case of the super fleas 2 years ago. Hope this info helps.
we have actually put that stuff in the Christmas ornament storage boxes and didnt have the first bug upon taking them outta storage.

Oysters! Yum, you definately have my attention now! I stopped Facebook because I too had the Farmville bug and then it became a chore to check in everyday and everything good started costing farm bucks, so I quit cold turkey. I think it's been at least a year now since I was on.But you can PM me here because I check my e-mail for thread updates daily.
Sounds like you are in a nice little rural area too. We just moved to St. Johns from the Mandarin area a few months ago so we are still discovering new things about our area too.We have another neighbor who has more than our .75 acre and he has chickens and a big pig too. Now besides our chickens I am collecting the materials to start a meal worm farm too. I have gottne good info on this site and some you tube videos about starting it up. Anyone have any experience with a meal worm farm?

Hate it when you got neighbors like that. As long as it isn't interfering with their homelife, they need to leave you be in your little farm paradise. Makes you almost want to put a compost bin next to the fence.

We just got one started. Read about it, and set one up in a plastic food bin from SAMs. It seemed like there were a lot of dead ones in the starter set we got. We have had it about a month I guess, and there are still beetles running around, eating the potatoes I put in there every week. But the mealworms have disappeared. Not sure if they are all down int he bran, hiding, or if they have changed over to larva, or died. There do seem to be a lot of the larva/pupa things. And they are alive, as they twitch every once in a while.

Looking forward to there being more mealworms, but they said it could be three months till new worms are being produced.

I have a red wiggler worm farm that i'm expanding now. My goal is to fertilize with as much manure(worm castings) (bunny poo)(horse poo) as possible this next spring. I'm happy to hear you kicked ur farmville habit lol. I just got burned out on it :) PLUS, my chickens will love the extra protein.

Thanks. I was thinking the time frame would be similar to what you suggested. I bought a plastic three drawers and plan to use ground chicken feed as my base with carrot for moisture. I am toying with the idea of cutting the bottom out of a drawer and replacing it with screen for the eggs to fall through. I found 1000 mealworms for $10 on Craigs list in the norhtside/Oceanway area of Jacksonville and that is the way I am planning to start.
