FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Will these two windows be enough ventilation in my coop? The coop will be in a mostly shaded and sheltered overhang. I could add another window on the front if needed. It measures 3'x3'x4' at the peak and the windows are almost 1sq foot.

I would personally take 1 or 2 of the boards out of the top 2 sides and put in hardware cloth for even more ventilation. Nice coop BTW.

Welcome!

I have two Red Sex Links (a cross between a rode island red and a white chicken like a delaware) and two Black sex links (a cross between a Rode Island Red and a black chicken like a barred rock I believe). The sex links are distinguishable in sex from hatching which is great if you're in an area like me where you can only have hens. The other benefit is they lay large brown eggs almost every day and are know by some companies as Production Reds and Blacks, or Red and Black Stars (mine are about 3mo old and should start laying sometime in July I'm guessing). Mine are very nice and tolerate my 4yr old holding them, and are good foragers. They sometimes come when called and really are quite easy to herd where I want them. The exception to this rule is my littlest chicken, a black sex link, Lorelai. She is very fussy, hates being handled and is tricky to catch. However, she is hands down the best forager. She even caught a lizard at only 6wks old. She finds the best stashes of bugs and clucks directions to the others. And that is why she hasn't been made into soup yet. Though I've been know to threaten that if she doesn't get in the cage NOW the next thing she'll see is the inside of a pot. But that's only once or twice a week :)

There are lots of great breeds out there. I also wanted Rode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, and especially Buff Orpingtons. But, those aren't easily sexed at birth and I didn't want to risk ending up with a rooster. Best of luck!

Hi everyone. Been a BYC member since last year, but never posted on this thread. I'm from way down in South Florida (near redlands). My wife and I have 6 hens, two of which are laying. We have 2 Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas, 1 Blue Copper Marans, 1 Black Tail Buff Marans, 1 Blue Laced Red Wyandotte and 1 Welsummer. We couldn't have gotten to where we are now if it wasn't for BYC and all the great folks on here. We're still working on all of the landscaping around our coop and getting the yard all fixed up. As soon as I have pictures of that finished up (if there's such thing), I'll post them up. Here are some pictures of our girls...

Hi! I'm in Volusia County and am looking to start out with 4-6 hens. We're looking for good layers with sweet dispositions. We'd love to have free-rangers who come into roost at night, so homebodies are preferred. What breeds should I be looking into? Thanks!

We are in St. Johns County. we started out in November with three, a Red Island Red, a New Hampshire Red and a Plymouth Barred Rock. the Barred being the bossiest, the New Hampshire being the most docile and the Rhode Island the fastest runner. They go into the coop each night to roost then selves and we lock the door behind them. We added an Australorpe about a month or more ago. This chicken is the most curious and eats out of our hand most consistently and comes when called. We are getting 3 eggs daily between the 4 hens, but since they pasture all day I suspect they may lay outside the box once in while too. They stick together most of the time when they are free ranging.

Great pictures TROPICS HENS ! Thanks for sharing

Gorgeous pics!Where did you get your blue laced red wyndotte?Did you order from a hatchery? I will be looking for some silver gold and blue laced soon for someone I know. They have also requested seabrites and aracaunas(not easter eggers) and black copper marans.I'm trying to get the list all together so hopefully we can get chicks which are all the same age.
