FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Do any of you Floridians use sand as litter for your coop? My coop is small… 4x4 feet and about 4' high… I'm moving my chicks out of the house/brooder and into the coop in a few days… I was thinking about buying sand from ACE and going with that. Any thoughts?

I switch from shavings to sand last summer because I felt the shavings seemed to harbor flies and had more odor issues. Sand works great. Less odor and I use a small rake to scoop it clean like cat litter. I still use shavings in nest boxes though

it will work well if you have a covered coop that the floor doesn't get wet.. you will be raking the poo out every once in a while..

I use sand in my juvenile pens. Makes it a lot easier to clean, check poop on and seems to keep the flies down. Sometimes we toss in hay for them to play in. They make a mess but it is worth it seeing how much fun they have tossing it about. You can purchase sand box sand at home depot if you do not have a source on your property that is pretty clean. We add sand three times a year or more.

I'm planning on a poop board… I only have 4 birds...

Check out using "Sweet PDZ" and modify your poop board into a poop tray (just put edges on it). There's a whole thread pn BYC about it. I use it and just love it. It is a desiccant...it pulls the moisture out of the poo and really helps with flies. It's fine to compost. When I don't have time to scoop, I'll at least cover the fresh poo and it takes care of it until I have time to scoop. I have 11 birds and I scoop the tray about once a week. You can get the Sweet PDZ at Tractor Supply. It's primarily sold as a horse stall freshener. Get the granular, not the powder (if they even sell the powder any more).

I use litter in my coops. When it's time to clean out my coops, I use a big shop vac with an extra long hose. We do have a tractor with a front end loader and I empty the vac when it fills up into the front end loader and put it in my compost pile.
