I agree FL Crowing Hen. People up in the northern part of the US would love the temperatures here. I was born in northern Michigan but we moved to Florida when I was young and I have lived nearly my entire life in Florida. My brother met a gal 40 years ago that was from the same general area where were from. She wanted to be closer to her family so they moved back up to Michigan. This was 40 years ago. I have been up a few times over the years to visit them in the summers and they have come to Florida to visit us. They usually come down for a visit during the winter and they always tell us that they think 40/50 degree weather here feels different that it does in northern Michigan but when they come down here the temperature up there is usually in the teens and that is the daytime high temperatures. Last time I talked to them they had around a foot of snow and were supposed to get another 8 inches that night. and the temperature was 14 degrees.

FL Crowing Hen, I'm new to using incubators. My hubby got me a Brinsea Octagon 20 and I've been running it for awhile before I just started using it a few days ago. So far, I've been thrilled with it! Brinsea has smaller incubators also. We ordered a GQF Genesis 1588 Hova-Bator too, but haven't even set that one up yet, so I'm not sure about that one.

I'm not FL Crowing Hen, but I have some older Hova-Bators that I have incubated in the past. For the past several years I have been using a cabinet incubator to incubate in but I still use the Styrofoam incubators as hatchers. I have a friend who has a couple of GQF Genesis 1588 Hova-Bators and he loves them. Mine are older but they work fine. I would first run a batch of barnyard eggs to get familiar with them, but that is entirely up to you. That is what I did. My first hatch was only about 60%. Now my hatches are close to 100%. I have had 100% but usually an egg or two doesn't make it. I have never used a Brinsea but know people who have and they loved them too. Good luck and have fun.

Hey Cmom, I'm using barnyard mixes in my first batch right now. 8 eggs from my own older girls and 13 mixes I bought from Craigslist. I'm sure hoping for the best! Since it's my first time incubating, I'm obsessive about checking the temp and humidity a zillion times a day.

We candled on the fourth day and some we weren't sure about at all, some looked like nothing was going on and some were obviously growing. So we put them all back in and are going to candle again in a couple of days. I didn't want to take any out and be wrong about thinking nothing was happening. I've been watching video after video about candling and trying to learn everything I can!

P.S. Which cabinet incubator do you have?

Just little friendly advice, just be careful about being obsessive about checking the temp and humidity a zillion times a day. I wouldn't candle again until day 10. It is really hard to see the embryo before then. I made a candler. Here are some pictures of my setup just to give you some ideas. For whatever reason I can't get the embryo video to work.
