FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Hello Friends,
I am only a year in to the backyard chicken hobby. I have 3 hens and one roo. Three, the roo and two hens are bantam blue Cochins, and the other hen is a cross bred, Wyandotte/Cochin. The cross hen is the only one laying right now. I have noticed that my hens are looking a bit bedraggled.... Is it molting time? They also look like they're sore, red/picked/scratched by servicing the roo. Any thoughts from you experts?

Why aren't the blue Cochins laying? Does my roo need more ladies?

(I'm feeding layer mash and they free range daily)

Thanks in advance!

If they are getting red(bare) spots on their heads, necks or wings I'd say your roo is very active and could or should have more hens... Three hens is kinda a low number for an active roo.. I'd say you need closer to ten hens.... If you have the space if not it might be easier to seperate him from them.. Although that runs a risk of preditors

Do you have any pictures you can post? My birds have started to molt and my males have favorite females. If your bird is molting she may stop laying while she is in molt. Good luck and have fun.

Thanks, Daskhan! Someone else, had told me a year ago that a roo needed at least 10 hens. Two of the hens ARE missing feathers from around their head (redspots), though not terribly. Separating the roo from the hens isn't really possible for me right now… unless I let the hens free range and cooped him up… would have to figure a way to let only the hens out… Just can't figure why only one hen is laying. I can tell her eggs apart from the two banty blue hen eggs because theirs are smaller. Where they seem to be scratched/red is on their back where the tail feathers meet their back...

CMOM, I will try to get a picture today.... My Cochins were SO fluffy and poofy before … and their little tails just don't look that way any more! And no eggs, sadly… :( thanks for the reply!

CMOM, where she looks whitish… she was always dark grey, blending to black (blue). She was a total poof ball! Her comb is nice and red, and I read that if its mites the comb would be pale. What do you think? She wasn't white looking above her legs before either.

She could be molting or a males favorite.
