I wanted to go but I have to go to Tampa for the fair semiar for the kids since they will be showing there.

So anyone in the central FL area that has shown chickens and might be willing to let me bring my girls to meet you. I've read everything I can on showmanship with chickens but not able to figure out what all will be expected of them with their chicken. I know they will have to handle the chickens themselves but not how and I know they have to talk to the judge but what are they suppose to say(what is too much as my lil one will run off the mouth on facts she learns forever).

Does anyone know any good videos online some place? The younger one wants to take our Polish in Nov. to the show nearby and show as a youth and do showmanship. The older one wanted to as well but she'll be in N.FL showing dairy goats.

Maybe your local 4-H office would have this information. I think there's a certain order of steps they must follow to handle & show their bird, showing off all its different parts. They must remember the "right" way to handle a chicken, such as always taking it out of its cage head-first, same with handing the bird to someone else & putting it back. Sometimes the judges will try to test the kids, hand them a bird backwards, and see if they'll take it or wait until it's aimed the right way. There's also a long list of questions they might be asked, some about chickens & poultry care in general, others about the points of their specific bird. They have to know what breed their bird is, and what the Standard of Perfection is for that breed.

It's supposed to be a good experience for the kids, the judges are supposed to be kind & gentle with them, especially towards the younger kids. I guess a lot would depend on the particular show and judges you encounter. My boys spend a lot of time with our birds and know a lot, but so far they haven't been interested in Showmanship.

Our County doesn't even do Showmanship at our fair so I highly doubt our 4h office will be of any help in the matter.

Hello ALL you Floridians...

I'm new to the forum from Pasco County (Central Florida). We just closed on our house and we're excited to get started having chickens. I've been reading a lot and learn so much on this site, it's wonderful.

We're still in the process of building our run for our coop, so we haven't gotten any hens yet. I'm sure there is MUCH MUCH more that I still need to learn but I'm glad I found such a helpful place to learn it.

If Fanning Springs on the Suwanee river isn't too far north for you to go there's going to be a small show that's just for what you're needing to learn.

And for some specific online information then go here:

Specifically what you're looking for is in the library here: http://www.apa-abayouthpoultryclub.org/educational_material.htm

Look in the "showmanship" section. It's broken down by age. The younger kids don't have to know as much as the older kids.
