At various times I've chased off our neighbors' aggressive cats with a high-power water gun, pepper spray, and an air pistol with rubber pellets. Generally, when I hit my target it doesn't come back for awhile!

We lost our first (anything) to a hawk today. My daughter released our young Muscovies from their night-time pen this morning, but when I went out a short while later one was dead just a short distance from the porch. I suspected raptor rather than a dog, because of the injuries: body intact, but flesh missing from the tail area. Sure enough, our neighbor came over later to say she'd seen a small brown hawk crouched in our yard...she didn't come over right away because she assumed it had a fish from the lake. We let some of our chickens free-range today, the weather was gorgeous, but never let them get more than a few feet from us. A new predator to be wary of.

Dianne: Angel went broody today! She made a little nest of shavings and grass, and pulled a couple eggs under...so cute! I guess I'll have to put some fertile eggs under her - I think she'll make a great mom.
