Hi all,
Boy a lot sure has happened in the past week or so. Sorry been too busy to be on here. Still trying to hunt down the packs of coyotes in the area. We got one, but was not the alpha male or female. The neighbors have also lost chickens, cats and goats to these packs. 7 other neighbor's that I know of have also been hit. Attacks are never at the same time, can be daylight or the middle of the night. Fla fish and game came out, said one of the packs is crossbred with strays, and has about 15 in the pack. So we are in deep $!#/.....
Maye

This must be the year for coyotes. A pack has been running around here killing livestock. One of my neighbors got hit twice last month and lost some goats to a pack both times and another neighbor lost several goats to this pack. I have electric fences with wires that start at about 4 inches off the ground. I have heard critters touch the wires and they haven't been back that I know of. Some neighbors have lost some birds also.

My neighbor behind me free ranges 100s of chickens to sell eggs in his organic market, and he was hit pretty bad last year from coyotes. He hired a trapper, and they trapped a lot of coyotes. Its been pretty quiet since then. Might want to look into something like that. Maybe everyone around can chip in and hire one. Losing livestock can be expensive and nerve wracking.

Maye, so sorry to hear its a mixed pack. I hope you and the neighbors can get some relief from their attacks.

We had a very active group of cyotes that worked the road and canal banks when moved out here. Our two Great Pyrenees turned two in December. By the time the male was 14-16 months old we stopped hearing the cyotes. We did hear that someone about 2-3 miles away lost a number of goats to them shortly after we started keeping the Pur outside full time.

Worth his weight in gold since he is poultry and waterfowl safe as well as protecting the herd of goats. Our female has moved inside from outside to be a companion dog and she loves following the human baby around the house. Planning to breed them this year and keep atleast 1 pup to be outside full with dad.

Not all LGD are good with birds, but those that are make having them so much easier.

Tired of the heat, moved all the pools around for the ducks and geese this weekend. Had to get them all under trees. The geese aren't grazing like they were out front either. Most of the waterfowl are molting right now too. The chickens are still kicking though, pulled in 31 eggs yesterday from them.

What a weekend. Hotter than blazes. Peaked at 98 both Saturday and Sunday. Mosquitoes driving us all mad. But I sold a LOT of birds! Moved out a dozen cockerels at Barberville. Didn't make anything on them, but Leghorn cross boys aren't going to bring anything anyway. Then came home and sold a bunch more birds. In fact I am now out of Leghorn pullets for the year. My feed bill is rejoicing! Makes up for the heat, humidity, mosquitoes, and customers who call me a dozen times. No more Craigslist ads till this fall!

I'm in Brandon Florida! :) Looking for 3 assorted hens & 1 Rooster that were raised as pets or willing to get chicks & raise myself. Had a fox mishap...ny pen & the floor have All Been rewired weather it needed it or not & everything seems to be fine, The 3 hens that are left are not a year yet Any suggestions as which way to go. I wasn't sure if I would be better with a small group that were raised as pets together or start with chicks. Of course they would be supervised when they got old enough to meet... for days if not weeks. Intro's will be short at 1st & longer as time goes on or perhaps a few teenage hens raised together maybe a better idea while my hens are still young???
Either way I'll need some chicks or young hens...3 hens & 1 rooster would be prefered assorted..lost a White Americana & a Rhode Island Red Rooster...have an Austrlope, a New Hampshire Red & a Buff Orpington raised as pets & together.
Looking for there replacements & to add a couple of more different hens...know any where I can get what I'm looking for close to Brandon Florida?! My last ones I got from Hillsborough County Fair!

I would appreciate any information or lead you could give me.

Thanks

Hi! I am in the Seffner-Valrico area. I have a gorgeous Splash Blue Wheaten cockerel out of Happy Mountain's line that I would like to see go to show. I hatched him and his siblings back in April. I also have a whole mess of Bantam Ameraucana chicks that hatched last week from Jerry Seigler. Another batch of Black Bantam Ameraucanas just went into lock down today. If you are interested PM me and we will figure out a day and time to get together! Good to know we have friends so close.

It's official...I am addicted to Wheaten and Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas. I hatched 4 of the most gorgeous babies from Happy Mountain this spring...and of course 3 were roos. I am looking for anyone who might have a few chicks, young pullets or hatching eggs available.

Also...genetics question. We have decided to keep 2 of our boys. One is a Blue Wheaten and the other is a standard Wheaten. What can I expect if I mix them with blue, black, or lavender hens? I read somewhere that the colors might leak but I have NO IDEA what that means! LOL!

I'm in Jacksonville!!! I'm brand new to this site and hope to have chickens real soon. So glad to be here.

(BTW ~ my user name was supposed to be "TheHippyGardener" but I guess the "r" got cut off) LOL!
