Hello everyone! I am from Florida and am new to chickens! I got my first chick exactly 2 days ago (Monday evening). I didn't plan on getting a chicken, but a friend at my work found one roaming the streets over the weekend. He tried to ask some neighbors who have a coop if it was theirs but it was not and they did not want it. My friend wasn't sure what to do with the chick either! I told him if no one else would take it then I would take it in and learn how to care for it. So, I picked her up on Monday evening and have been reading and reading and reading here and online ever since! I love all kinds of animals. My family jokes that my husband and I should just open a zoo because we have 3 dogs and 7 chinchillas and now.....a baby chick named Nova!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! How nice of you to take this little chick in and give it a home. It would be lovely for the chick to have a friend if yiu could get her one. They do so much better with company of their own kind. Have you dropped by the learning centre? Lots of super articles on how to cre for your chick and keep it happy and healthy. Here is the link > https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Wishing you the very best of luck and be sure to ask any questions that you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly. Enjoy BYC :frow

Chickens are flock animals and really do better with a buddy or two, unless you want to raise your chick as a house chicken. Then you can be her substitute friend. You might want to check out the thread "People with house chickens." My friend has 5 in the house (all bantams). In the meantime give her a mirror, so she thinks there is another chick with her, and a stuffed toy to cuddle with.

I did check out the learning center first thing when I got Nova on Monday. It was really helpful because I went from no chicken knowledge at all to....I have a chick now, what do I do? Hehe. I'll def check out the house chickens section, I haven't seen that one yet. I did learn that chickens like buddies. The feed store near me doesn't have any chicks yet but I'm considering it bc I don't want her to be lonely. In the meantime, I'll def be using the mirror trick so thank you very much for the tip!
