Flowering Vines in Run?

Quote:
I had a star jasmine in a pot for several years, and then I moved... and it stayed behind - that was only a few towns away. The other day I found some and the star jasmine were cold hardy to 20 degrees - so I picked the Pink Jasmine which said it was cold hardy to 10 degrees. I hope it survives, as I love the way they smell!

OMG~ where do you get pink jasmine???

LOWES!!! But I also saw it at Fred Meyer. It was cheaper at Lowes though.

I have bean vines and will be planting climbing peas this winter (I'm in California with pretty much an all year growing season) against my duck yard, they like to reach between the rocks at the bottom of the fence for leaves and also eat the climbers that they can reach through the hardware cloth... but this way I get food and flowers and a nice bushy plant to cover my yard. I am also planting a morning glory with a red ruffled flowers called sunrise seranade available at http://www.seedsavers.org/Details.aspx?itemNo=1272 and I think my ducks will be fine. That website also has a ton of attractive and unusual vines... I planted my morning glories last month and they are already 1 foot tall. Also, have you ever seen japanese or chinese lantern vine flowers.... soooo interesting.

I do like the grape Idea too...

I don't have experience with other vining species, but I do have grape vines over the run. I like them because they provide continuous forage for the chickens for a good portion of the year here. It's also great fun watching the chickens jump up for the ripening grapes!

Here is what the run looks like early in the spring and then in mid-summer:

I have Kiwi vines- I'll tell you next season what the chickens think of them (I'm just staring out this season with chickens), but the for now the cats love them. Apparently, there is something in the kiwi vine chemically similar to the component in catnip that drives cats bonkers. I was wondering why my first set was eaten down to the ground even tho the cats chased away all the bunnies. It wasn't bunnies at all- the cats themselves did it!

I've been thinking about things that I could grow near the coop that would keep up with the chickens picking at them, and the hardy Kiwi and Chayote are my two top choices. They are both vigurous and fast growing vines, and both seem to be nontoxic. The Chayote vine is cheap, buy a Chayote"squash" at the local mexican mart and half plant it and let it go. In asia they eat the greens and tendrils in salads and stirfries, and the fruit taste a lot like summer squash. Altho in my zone I'm not sure my summer is long enough for it to set fruit and it grows as an annual above?zone 7? zone 8?

As for the Kiwi, if they are happy I've heard they will grow 40 ft in one season- of course that is if YOUR cats don't figure out that it's addictive like mine have

I gave up on their old location and had to buy whole new plants.
