Fluconazole for Crop?

Speaking of atypical hens, all the feather anomalies are amazing! Margo (Brown Leghorn) has a couple spangled feathers, Bridge (Barred Rock) has a couple solid beetle green/black feathers... super interesting and I can’t wrap my head around the genetics... why just a couple random feathers?

Or maybe Margo’s are technically mottled... they look like Speckled Sussex feathers.

Glad some others had more dosing info! I have had to make small doses out of pills or capsules before and I use coconut oil. Mix the crushed pill or emptied capsule into softened (not melted) coconut oil, divide into the required number of doses onto a paper towel or parchment paper and refrigerate or freeze til firm. Then you have that many 'pills' of the correct dose, and coconut oil goes down easy.

I like it!

So Roxy’s crop was already empty this morning, but I had already started the Clotrimazole cream treatment t. I’ll finish it out. For humans, it’s just a 3-day course. Thinking maybe 5 for Roxy to be safe?

And when it rains, it pours. Bridgey is sitting around. She appears to be nursing a foot injury. Middle toe looked slightly swollen and maybe bruised. She’s favoring it.

My vet prescribed 50mg tablets, one a day, for 7 days, for my light Sussex hen. Not sure on her weight but she's lost a lot while ill with her sour crop.

I've been opening the tablet and tipping it in about 5ml of water which I then syringe directly down her throat. I am still feeding her Kefir yoghurt which I also have to syringe straight down her throat, otherwise she isn't eating.

Does this sound ok?? I feel like the dose sounds quite high. This is her second dose of it today but I haven't seen any changes yet

5 mg per pound of weight is about right. How much does your hen weigh? If she is about 5 pounds you could give a half tablet. I mix powder meds in yogurt, cream cheese, or cat food pate. If the tablet is crushed and soluble in water, it can be added to water in a syringe.

Not sure on her weight, but I'll try to weigh her when I get home. I might mix it in with yogurt in future as the powder from the tablet does not appear to be soluble. I have just been sucking it up with a syringe while it's floating in water and it seems to get the majority of it.

The easiest ways to get a weight is the use of an inexpensive kitchen gram scale, sold in most Walmarts and Targets. The other less exact is to weigh yourself holding the chicken, then subtract your weight. If she is say, 7 pounds, that would be about 35 mg of the 50 mg tablet. Crushing that tablet and adding it to a tsp or 5 ml of yogurt or yogurt and a bit of water, each ml would equal 10 mg. You can get no needle dosage syringes at your pharmacy or Walmart.

Thanks for that, I'll sort that for her when I get home. I'll probably add it to yoghurt now.

May I just ask if you know if yellowish diarrhea is standard for sour crop chickens? It looks similar to when one of them had EYP before, however I don't think she does have EYP as her crop is watery and her abdomen feels normal.

Thanks! I just don’t know how I could divide a tiny tablet down that far and don’t have the means of making up a proper suspension to dilute down.
if the tablets are 100mg, crush 1 tablet and add 20 tsp water. Give 1 tsp daily for 7 days = 5mg daily
