Fly control

Holy buckets!!! I'm going to try that!!! When you say "seed them" what do you mean? Sprinkle them?? I'm just not familiar with this. THANKS!!!
Exactly. Just sprinkle them wherever you have any waste. They will start attracting wild soldier flies that will keep the process going. I wouldn't be without my BSF bin.

Reptiworms sells them for around $45 for 1500 larva. This is more than enough to kickstart the whole process. You may check with local pet shops that sell reptiles, and ask if they sell Phoenix worms. You should be able to buy a small cup with 100 larva for under $10

The larva aren't even gross. They are dry when collected. They have also proven to have an antibacterial property that makes them pathogen free.

You shouldn't have to reseed them. The larva go dormant in the winter, and as soon as it warms up, they surface, morph into soldier flies and start the process all over again. The chemicals they produce stay there over the winter attracting female soldier flies to lay their eggs.

How interesting!!! When I sprinkle-- what if they get eaten? Should I do it at night so they can settle? Do I cover them with dirt? And this bsf bin --- where do you leave it? Is it compost? I'm confused :)

Here is a blog on BSF, http://blacksoldierflyblog.com/

Here is my BSF Composter, 30 gallon drum set at an angle so that liquids run to the front and drain out. All kind of scraps and dead stuff go in they make quick work of it..

Where can we find more information about Black Soldier Flies? Without looking at the moment, is there another thread or does anyone know of a good informational website?

Another interesting fly repellent that I've read about on the rabbit groups I'm in is vanilla scented car air fresheners. They got a big thumbs up for clearing out flies when hung around rabbit barns a few feet apart, especially around the eaves of an open sided or windows/doors of an enclosed style rabbitry.

Cheers,
Jessie

I had the same issue with flies under the pen! I rake up the poo often but it still attracts flies. I got some ag lime ( make sure its ag, as that is the safe kind) and sprinkled it over the ground under the pen and no more flies ;)
