Mehjr10, I am so jealous of your BSF bin. It's much bigger than mine. Looks great!!

Easy to make, 30 gallon drum cut out half the lid and put about 3.5" of elevation on the back end.. Put a screened drain at the bottom end.. I roll up some cardboard and now hang it by a wire over the waste for the females to lay there eggs on. I have a good batch going now and they are just starting to crawl off. The girls are Happy.. You can walk up to the bin and hear them a working..

Do any of you guys know where I can get any BSF? I know you can order online, but most of the places want you to join a program where they ship you some once a month for several months. I've called the local pet stores, and I can find anyone that has them.

Mine started from the wild ones in the environment, if you put out scraps I started seeing them in a couple of days. The regular flies will hit it first then you will see BSF flies.. They look like what we call dirt dobers.. It takes I believe 14 days for lay to crawl off on the BSF.. But if you need some PM me and we can check on it .. CA may be kind of picky.

I have had some flies also and have used diatomaceous earth sprinkled around the cage to keep them at bay. D.E. is not for eaverybody as it is toxic to breath a.nd rain will wash it away.
Another meathod that i have not tried is hanging clear ziplock bags full of water near a problem area. The flies see their reflection and apparently think its a bigger fly which scares them away. I saw this work at a table outside of a restaurant in florida before. It was summer time and i didnt see the first fly.

I don't think you can purchase 100% permethrin. It comes in a small percent mixed in with other inert ingredients. You can get permethrin spray in the bird section of many pet stores, in the horse section of many feed stores or even in the garden section of most discount drug stores. Seven dust is permethrin powder. Walmart still carries it.
