We are just building a run for our ladies and are wondering how high they can fly, and do we need any type of enclosure over it.

I don't know how well they can fly (breeds differ in abilities) but, they will be much safer with a top on their enclosure . For one thing it will keep out hawks that love to pounce on chickens. For another it can keep some snow/rain off of them and perhaps add shade.

Hi and :welcome

Our chickens can fly over their fence that's about 1.5m tall (at least, the young ones can ). If you're worried about them escaping you can always clip their flight feathers, which means they can't fly properly but aside from that doesn't do them any harm.

I agree with above post, most of the time predators are a greater concern so it's always good to have a cover over your run if you have predators in your area.

Good luck!
