Flying/jumping at each other?

Too funny to find this post as I was just about to ask the same question with my Silkies! They are about 3 weeks and when they are in their big Brooder (big play pin converted) with the 18 other chicks including a large Cochin and they see any flapping, or running etc... two of them always fly up and put their chest out and bang into them as they stand up with beaks up ...like "Bring It ON!"

Total short man syndrome!

well really hoping they are female but only time will tell. ? Does anyone know if this is more common in Roo's and an early sign? Or do both female and male do this for pecking order?

I have so much fun watching them play like that! My Barred Rocks try to stand on the poor Silkie that's been raising them. She's 5 months old now, so not very big. The BE I suspect is a roster challenged my Rat Terrier the other day!

Mine started this last night. They are only one week old! I wasn't expecting this behavior for a while. Is it ok at one week, or could something be wrong? They have plenty of food, electrolyte and probiotic in water, a small lid of chick grit, and the temp is about 85 under the light. Sometimes it sounds like WWIII in there.

Mine are doing this and when I place my hand in their brooder I have one jump on my hand and roost. It is pretty cute. Then when others try to do the same it jumps down and chases them around and comes back up. He/she is the smallest of the bunch but not letting that stop him/her

It's funny, how right after you see something and you get on BYC, there's a thread for it, right there at the top! I just put my 6, all around 1-2 weeks old, in a bigger brooder and the first thing they do is start flapping around and running at each other. I didn't know if it was just because they suddenly had more room or what. The pecking order thing crossed my mind, but they're the same 6 that were in the smaller brooder together so I didn't know if that was it. Anyway, fun to watch as long as they play nice!
