Frazzled chicken tender
Songster
I’ve read a good bit here about this, but wanted some input that I’m handling this the right way. I’ve been sick, and also extra overwhelmed lately, and neglected cleaning my coop as often.
My Brahma hen, who lately has more poop on her backside, seemed to be staying near the coop. I bathed her and realized while cleaning her she has fly strike. It was a shock, and I’ve never dealt with something like this. I bathed her in a solution of water and chorohexidine, tried to debride her wound, and then sprayed her with pyrethrin. Was not able to get all maggots out of wound. This morning, longer soak with same mixture, and epsom salts. The maggots seemed to be dislodged by the water, and afterward didn’t see any more in her wound. Blew her dry, fed her egg yolk and blueberries, and put her back on her favorite spot in the coop. The other hens are leaving her alone. Also left coating of chorohexidine on wound. Anything else I should be doing? I’ve attached pics for any input re the wound. Why is the skin black? Should I try to debride it more? Sorry for the graphic nature of the photos and this post, but not sure how else to phrase what we are dealing with.
