Unfortunately I lost my 6-year old hen yesterday to flystrike. The vet said she was 'too far gone' to be treated, even though I thought I'd caught it very early as I do check her bottom regularly. She hadn't seemed out of sorts or distressed, just dripping from her vent which is what alerted me. Does anyone know what causes it and how long it takes to develop? I wondered if it was because my hensitter said my hen hadn't gone upstairs to roost while I was away and so had spent 2 nights sitting on damp ground - this was a week ago. And I think she'd stayed outside because the cat had sneaked up to sleep there while I was away. I always check inside before I lock up the coop at night. but I guess my hensitter didn't ... Would be grateful so I know how I avoid another such catastrophe in the future.

! Pleased you joined us! Sorry to hear about your hen. I don't know much about flystrike - did a little research to understand it better but I wouldn't know how to prevent it. You might post in the link below - someone will be able to advise you much better than I. Good luck to you!
