I posted about my dude Stan back in the fall/winter, he was wheezing and had a foamy eye. To be honest, not sure if the two were related but both resolved and he’s been great. Actually, he’s been really great lately despite a bad leg and going through it in the winter- he lost almost all his belly and neck feathers and a lot of weight but they’ve grown back and he’s put on some lbs. he’s feeling so great these days, in fact, that his hormones are raging and he’s fighting with my other drake. So, they’re separate except at night when they go in the coop together. He spends the day with my two very small khaki Campbell females that he’s trying to mate with- because of his disability he’s pretty unsuccessful. Anyway, this week I noticed he’s a had some bubbles in his eye. They go away when he dunks his head in water and don’t really come back often, so I wasn’t too worried and chalked it up to maybe getting sand or dirt in there that he had to blow out. But tonight there was a pretty big collection of bubbles there and I noticed the membrane in the corner was light pink (not red) and visible, and the small feathers on the top and sides of his eye seem stiff. He has no other symptoms of anything right now, so wondering still if this could be an injury from his tiffs with my other drake or trying to mate with the girls? How would I treat it to make sure that it doesn’t get infected if it’s an injury? I searched through some similar threads but didn’t see where anyone landed in terms of a rinse or a cream to put on it. Thanks!

This bit of irritation will get better with bathing in salt water.

Use 1tablespoon salt dissolved in a cup of warm water

Wrap the duck in a towel so you can hold him against your chest with one arm and swab the eye from one side to the other with small pieces of clean cloth or cottonwood balls soaked in the saline solution. Only use each small square of cloth or cotton wool ball once and discard.

If you swab his eye twice the first day, it will likely only need swabbing once a day after that.

In my experience foamy eye doesn't need antibiotic ointment although I agree terramycin eye ointment is goo's for bacterial eye infections

The drake in the photo does have a bacterial infection -- with yellow pus discharge. However, I am just indicating how your duck should be wrapped in a towel!

Thank you! I ordered the terramycin to have on hand in case any of my birds (6 chickens, 4 ducks!) have an issue- we are building a nice little kit at this point, also have silver cream which does really well for cuts and scrapes and chlorhexidine for soaks. I’m going to try this salt flush today. He did wake up with no foam this morning but want to make sure any debris or other irritation is flushed out before it becomes a problem.
