I am devastated! And ashamed of my ignorance!! I know people are cruel.
BUT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!!!EAT SOMETHING ELSE!!!>LIKE DUCK OR GOOSE OR CHICKEN!!!!!!!!DON'T TORTURE THEM FIRST!!!.........Sorry, had to get that out.
BEFORE ANYBODY GETS MAD AT ME FOR POSTING THIS. I just needed to let it out. Since DH isn't here right now for me to yell at!!
...By the way, Congrats to California for banning it!
Only wish they didn't have to wait until 2012!

Edited to add what it is....
Foie gras birds are kept in tiny wire cages or packed into sheds. Pipes are repeatedly shoved down the birds' throats, and up to 2 kgs (almost 4lbs) of grain and fat are pumped into their stomachs two or three times every day. The pipes puncture many birds' throats, sometimes causing the animals to bleed to death. This cruel procedure causes the birds' livers to become diseased and swell to up to 10 times their normal size. It is literally diseased tissue that is served up with relish and at an awful cost - to the patrons too.

There are some operations who are doing humanely raised Foie gras now which you can seek out and support. Not all operations are necessarily bad. With that said, the bad operations are simply awful.

Also, NO PETA posts here on this subject. I will be watching this closely.

I believe part of being a human and into agriculture and food is to know and understand the different ways of eating (parts, methods and beasts) of our ancestors and showing some respect for them.

Sorry! No PETA Posts. Even they are too extreme for me. So a show they put out when I was a teenager. CRIED FOR WEEKS AND COULDN'T SLEEP.

I just wanted to know what it was. In a way I wish I never new. Will do more research on the humane ways of CREATING Fois Gras!.
Hopeful

I am moving this to meat birds.

Foie gras is indeed Fat Liver. It is a diseased organ caused by force feeding so that the liver is up to 10 times what it should be. The ducks and geese cannot move, they cannot swim and their quality of life is like living in a toilet.

The inhumane treatment of these birds is unconscienable. It makes meat chicken production look like a sunny spring with sweetness and light.

I think it should be outlawed, period.
