Food and water in the coop or in the run?

I keep the food inside the coop and water out in the run :) On cold days I put the water inside of course when I need the water heater.

Thanks ChicKat,

I broke down and ordered a step feeder so only the chickens will be able to get at the feed. Thanks for the advice though!

Know what....I went out this morning...and one of the feeding cups was empty for my chicks....and I think a night-time marauder may have emptied it. I

may follow in your foot steps and get a step feeder---Wonder if rodents can learn to use them. :O) Tonight I just brought the feed in.

I think the step feeders are usually set at 1lb. resistance, so even smaller birds cannot access the food. Your feed should be safe unless you have really big rats in you neighborhood

A local hedge hog figured our foot feeder out, but a few nights with a pot on top and it soon moved on.

I keep the food inside the coop to protect it from the weather. The watering nipples are mounted outside. Any drips fall on the ground. The chooks don't seem to have any trouble remembering to go inside to eat. They seem to drink water more often that they eat, so it might be more convenient to have the water outside. So far as I know, they don't eat or drink at night.

Thanks Chris, I think I will set up their water system outside too, would be less crowded in the run.
