Food coloring in the vent.....

Aren't you worried that you might introduce bacteria doing this that could cause an infection? Or possibly injure the tissues of the cloaca with the tip of the squeeze bottle? I sure would be.

Here is a picture of an egg I took today. A couple days ago I took two silkie pullets out of the pen and put them by themselves. Once I saw an egg in the pen I put green food coloring into one hen and red in the other. Today there was a egg with red dye streaks. I applied the food coloring about 3 days ago.

I'm glad to see this works because I have some investigating to do in my own hen house. And yes, it is a funny subject, and no I would never admit to anyone outside of this forum that I tried it. Local pharmacist still hasn't gotten over my placing order for poly-vi-sol without the iron for my chickens.

I think they're trying to figure out who lays which eggs.

But really. Seriously. Putting food dye in the vent -- to me -- says you're gonna get multi-colored poops all over the place. It's all gonna come off on the poo, ya know. Unless, of course, you're just dying to identify each plop of poop with the pooper that did it!
