Food, Fuel, Feed and Chickens

I'm a union steamfitter,,,, i know what the road and grandma for a sitter are like, if you work nukes, I'm sure we know each other.

I'll trade the age of your kids, and my daughters small horse/big pony,,, having 33, 2' pines blown over and needing removed, and on, and on.

So the story goes, I deal with it....
No adult kids, bethrowed, or inlaws for help.

Neighbor cost the same as grandma, 200 a week,,,, so
400 a week animal and kid care.

Thats if I work or not, no free ride, take care of buisness,and go about my own.


Know of any live in, kid and chicken loving nannys?

We had our community meeting (post #11). There are 5 of us. The 6th neighbor opted out for now but will consider.
We have come up with the idea if a community pantry. To start - everyone chips in $40 for stocking up on things we all use. Toilet Paper, Paper Towels, etc. One neighbor works at a drug store and gets over the counter things at cost. So she will get asprin, allergy meds, etc. Everything will be under 2 locks. Each month 2 different people will be in charge of the pantry and inventory. If you want something you have to contact one of them to let you in and take your money for the items you take out. We will pay what the items cost. No profit. As prices rise there won't always be enough money to replace so we will all have to add money to the pantry fund on occasion but at least it will save us trips to the store for some of the things we forgot. We are working on finding a freezer for the pantry to increase our store supplies and a fridge.
Since most of us don't have kids at home but cook like we do we are putting up a bulletin board to post about large quanties of prepared food.
Example: Carolyn has half a cholcolate cake leftover. Come get it.
We have known each other for years and we all trust and like each other, have all eaten at each others houses, so there will be no worries on eating anything someone else cooks.
We will also put our fresh produce in the pantry for sale and they will start buying my eggs instead of getting them free or either chip in with feed cost.
Like I said, we are kind of close knit anyway and we have always chipped in to help each other for years. We figure we are just stepping it up a notch.

I put up around 6-8 cords a year of mixed wood. I am not all that hung up on what I burn, I do keep some osage orange and oak aside for the really cold nights, other then that if it burns I use it.

Take it from me, from one single parent to the other, it gets easier but you'll miss these days... one day. My youngest is now 16 and I'm just realizing....man, I'm going to miss my sweet, sweet kids! They went through it with me...all the struggle and juggle. I miss the little feet and little faces, the feeling that we just have each other to depend on and that ain't so bad. Bravo to you, NB!

That is a great way to get wood. The state gets a bit of fire control out of your work and you get usable BTU's.

It will take more people like us to make this nation less dependent on oil. I understand the limitations of burning wood, but, I also understand that at least in my area a lot more of us could be doing it.

Hear, hear! I live in the middle of tall timber.com and a good majority of the folks still heat with fuel oil! My boys make fun of me for coveting as I drive by a woodlot with downed trees rotting on the forest floor...right next to someone's fuel oil tank! I always say, "Look at all that wood going to waste!!!! "

I have read a lot about the carbon exchange between burning wood and the release of carbon and the decay of the same wood and the release of carbon, my belief from those readings is that there is a near break even, except that when I burn it I get the use of the BTU's.

I have no plans to stop burning wood and my foot print on the plant. I plant trees with my son every year as my little attempt at being green as I keep my family warm.
