hmm.. thanks i didn't know. Do you think if I mix the cedar with the pine and only put it in the run it would be ok? Although the DE does a great job in keeping the smell down. Our coop is in the backyard and when we are outside doing whatever I don't like to smell the coop. Especially if we have guest over for cook outs. Thanks

I too use Food grade DE. I have found that their poop is more formed instead of a runny glob. All of mine love to dust bath in it. Since then I have never had another break out of mites, lice, and worms. My chickens were infected from all the wild pigeons in the barn. The pigeons come from a dog hunting kennel. They use them for training and they end up at our barn. So I started giving the pigeons some feed with the DE and an area for dust bathing. They are in bird heaven and they no longer die from worm infestation. So does this work or not? I have purposely cut open the pigeons when they died and they were filled with all kinds of worms. The pigeons that die now are no longer infested. My chickens have a beautiful shine and their feathers are gorgeous. I will continue using DE as I have seen the benefits first hand and it truly works for me.

For those of you who need scientific proof, well I don't have much faith in many scientist . If you look at the medical field they tend to do more harm than good. Mother nature is the best scientist in the world. After all if you look at the animal kingdom many animals are seen eating and licking up DE and other natural elements to ride them selves of many different parasites. If you were a rancher a 100 years ago then you would be giving your livestock (horses,pigs,cattle,chickens) tobacco leaves or have them ground up to get ride of worms. It worked. I had 5 horses that I used tobacco to deworm. Two of them were allergic to the man made wormers. So their again mother nature was my guide.

The best thing to do is just fallow your gut and if you like the results then go ahead. If you don't like the results then stop but don't bash others for using it. If you have a problem with it then you shouldn't take an aspirin as that is another one of mother natures gifts that is all natural and used for many different medical conditions. Tylenol is man made and it kills your liver but just think that doctors just love to give it. So the real question is , man-made or Mother Nature?

I just bought a bag of DE. I am planning on putting it in the coops and considering feeding it to the chickens just as a "science experiment" to see about the egg strength and size issue. I will continue to worm them a couple of times a yr just to be on the safe side. My question is should I offer it on the side in a dish or should I mix it with the feed?

I mix mine with the feed. I have heard it done both ways.

I give mine in with the wet mash that I mix at night. I also mix in some vitamins in the winter just as a boost.

Hi Joe.... here is a link to a site that talks about how much to give to different animals. They also sell it so I am pretty sure that they would know how much is safe and what it treats. For the record everything I read in multiple places states clearly that DM kills worms and parasites in the animals and that would include heartworm. I read that in a specific area on another site because it strongly cautioned DO NOT GIVE without first having a heartworm test run at your vets office because if they do have heartworm and it kills them it will kill your animal as the adult worms are in the heart and when they die they clog it and stop the heart from working properly. pasted below is the site address and some info right from the site below it. Diatomaceous Earth For Pets and Animals
Pets - they come in all shapes and sizes. Protect them with DE. When lightly rubbed into their coats or dusted on their premises, it is very effective against fleas, ticks, lice, and other pests on pet dogs, cats, and birds. It can also be used as an organic wormer and will kill any worms or parasites the pets may have. When using as a de-wormer, mix the DE into their food as follows:

• Large Cats - 1 teaspoon
• Kittens - 1/4 teaspoon
• Dogs 100 lbs + - 1-2 tablespoons
• Dogs 50 - 100lbs - 1 tablespoon
• Dogs Under 50 lbs - 1 teaspoon
• Mini dogs - 1/2 teaspoon

This is what I bought at TSC I plan on using it for fleas on my dogs, what I haven't seen before with prior use is the calcium bentonite. I have used it in the past a long time ago dusting it on the dogs and around house and yard to help it works. But i am not sure about the bentonite. It also states food chemical codex grade not sure what that means
