Food, Inc.

I 100% agree that SOME of what is fed to animals is not healthy for us. (Like feeding meat by-products back to the same species of animal they were taken from. That is a proven way to spread diseases.)

But I have noticed there seems to be a big opinion difference on the way the animals are treated. One side, that gets there info from movies, books, and other second-hand sources, sees them as having a horrible existence.

The other side, who has 'been there, done that', whether they work there, farm, raise them themselves, or have just been in the places, whatever, they seem to think that it is probably not the best set up, but it is nowhere near as horrible as it is made out to be.

All I am saying is, DONT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR, read, see, whatever. Yes, their are lies in the big corporations, but their are also lies in the ones who have a different agenda.

This problem is not only agriculture/animals. I had a science teacher in high school, back in the 60's that worked at a Karo syrup factory, and he told how if it splashed out of the vat, the workers took a metal scoop and scooped it right back in off of the filthy floor. . .this is not a new problem, and I agree the producers like to take the worst scenarios and make it out to be the way the whole system operates. BUT, doesn't it make you suspicious that the big food producers wouldn't let the cameras in or make good solid statements supporting their method of food preparation? Makes me think they DO do things that are not sanitaty for anyone or anything involved. I worked in a meat locker and I do have to say the way the animals were slaughtered might not have been nice, but it was quick and humane. I never watched, couldn't stand the thought of it, but I asked questions and none of the guys hesitated or tried to beat around the bush about their method.

Whoever sees the movie let us know if its badly violently graphic. I can't take that. . .would love to see it, but can't if it shows animals being abused.

I know there are things that take place that probably shouldn't, but I think the reason they didn't allow camaras in is because of past experiance they know that no matter how many minutes of good, positive footage the filmmakers might film of their operation the only thing that will be shown is the ten seconds of something questionable that they filmed. Don't kid yourselves.....the people who make these kinds of films have an agenda....it's to make money and I don't think they care very much about who their half-truths and untruths hurt as long as they make money at the box office.

Movies like this don't make a ton of money at the box office. I think their agenda is more to inform and educate people about the dangers of our current food system. Do they only show the bad stuff about some farms, I imagine they sometimes do, but they can't show something that isn't there already.

I wonder how many books these people have sold because of their movies? Would they still be preaching what they're preaching if they weren't making money off the films and books? I seriously doubt it.

OK.

But again, how DO you define "food"?

I hear ya Wifezilla, I get what you are trying to accomplish and I think that your ultimate goalis good, but serisously your "nutritional opinions" are so far from the truth it is borderline bizarre.

You won't eat a boiled potato? You refuse to consider corn on the cob, fresh from your garden "food"? You only eat raw meat? Or no meat? How about cooked rice? Beef jerkey? Tomato sauce? Pasta isn't food? I mean, I am curious as to how you turn wheat grain into dinner?

Did you know...just asking here...that the acids in your stomach denature EVERY molecule of protein you put in your body, whether it has been "fortified" (with vitamins - I don't really get that either) or not?

Food is defined as:

1 a: material consisting essentially of protein, carbohydrate, and fat used in the body of an organism to sustain growth, repair, and vital processes and to furnish energy ; also : such food together with supplementary substances (as minerals, vitamins, and condiments) b: inorganic substances absorbed by plants in gaseous form or in water solution.

So, what IS your definition of Food?

Considering the number of people in my local area who are now trying to promote a movie with a similar theme called Fresh, I think they would. Now granted, I haven't seen Food Inc., or read the book, but from what has been said about it here and other places, I think I pretty much know what its message is. The groups here trying to promote Fresh are absolutely not doing it to raise lots of money, but to try and raise awareness. We are even going so far as to arrange a showing with a banquet afterwards that uses only local food sources. I really don't think most people care about the money. Sure, you have to have income to live on, but I don't think that is the be all, end all point to what people like this are trying to do.
