Thanks! I was thinking of doing that. First I was gonna try our bird bath heater pad thingy under the waterer but I highly doubt it will work for really cold temps. Or I may end up keeping the feed outside and the waterer inside. I too hate to take up space in my little coop so I will windproof underneath it and around first four feet and try to make it pleasant enough for them to come outside to feed.
We have hanging pellet (plastic) and water (galvanized) dispensers in the coop and a water (galvanized) dispenser outside in the run. Our girls get their veggies in their run. We ran power to the coop a couple of weeks ago so the girls are on the national grid now. We will put the inside water dispenser on an electric water heater placed on a concrete block in the coop during the extremely cold winter months.
Food inside only in a ABS feeder raised to keep bedding out. They spend most oftheir time inside during the week. I choose not to feed outside because they could care less for feed when they are loose (I tried, they just go back in if they need to), and I don't want to attract birds/squirrels/rats/etc.
Water is available both in and out (nipple only for outside, dual waterer inside)
I have 2 hanging feeders (one galvanized, one made out of a 2 gal. plastic pail with a plant saucer attached for a tray) and a galvanized waterer in the coop, and one homemade 2 gallon waterer outside in the run. Mine also get their "wet" treats outside-it's just too messy putting them in the coop. I plan to use a heated dog dish on top of a cement block in the coop for their waterer this winter-the galvanized waterer fits down inside the dog dish, so hopefully that will keep the whole thing from freezing.
I don't have water or food in my coop, both are in run. Chickens have access for about 14 hours per day. Base heater for water and hanging galvy feeder.
Chickens stay in coop after it is dark as light is only in coop, not the run.
