Hi Betty. Welcome to BYC!

What you need to feed partly depends on age as well as other factors like if you free range or not.

I have a mixed age and gender flock. So I personally use a Flock Raiser that has 20% protein and 1% calcium. I provide oyster shell on the side free choice at all times for the layers. And they help themselves to whatever they find in the garden or on the land. I do not provide grit because they can get plenty of that from their free range environment.

I also ferment my feed and highly recommend it if you have the time and energy. The link in my signature line will take you to some frequently asked questions and quick facts about it.

I stay away from corn and scratch as it is kinda like a candy bar. But people generally recommend not more than 5-10% of the daily ration.

Everybody has different ways. Sumi gave you good links to check out.

Glad your brother pointed you in our direction! Hope you enjoy BYC as much as I do. Lot's of wonderful, friendly, caring and knowledgeable people here.
