Foods that you wouldn't eat as a kid but now...

Zuccini.....HATED it! My mom used to cook it until it was soggy and then served it COLD!!! (TEXTURE & TEMPERATURE double whammy!)

Now I LOVE it (when it's HOT)! LOVE zuccini bread/muffins/etc! I haven't convinced my 5 year old though. I think it's just a 'maturing taste' kinda thing! I don't eat as many 'sweets' as I used to as well!

I used to eat raw onions like apples when I was little...now I at least cook them first!
We used to eat cow tongue, Rocky Mountain oysters and chicken gizzards! (not saying i was a HUGE fan...but we had to try it!)
* Cottage Cheese....try it over a slice of tomato with a little salt and pepper. Used to LOVE this...can't do CC anymore.
* avocado toast....toast, butter, avocado slices w/salt & pepper....YUM!!! (not mushy over-ripe avocados BTW)

When I was a little girl, my grandparents' friends came to visit (I grew up in HI) with their granddaughter. She REFUSED to eat ANYTHING that was "red". I was FLABBERGASTED! Apples? Cherries? Strawberries? Raspberries? NOPE she said! That night, grandma served strawberries for dessert. She REFUSED to eat them cause they were obviously RED! I had an idea, I taught her to dip the strawberry in sour cream, then rolled it in brown sugar (an old family thing we used to do) and showed her the strawberry was NO LONGER red! She ate it and LOVED it! Her grandparents had called a couple weeks after they left to thank me again cause since then, she started trying all kinds of RED things! It's funny how tastes can and do change!

That sounds good-- I'm just now learning about the wonders of avocado....will have to try that!

Grew up in Hawaii!!! Had all KINDS of 'tropical' fruits I grew up with! My hubby...from MD....doesn't have the 'taste' for most of my tropical fruits! He's admitted with avocados...it's a 'texture' thing.
MANGOES......LOVE MANGOES!!!! MISS GOOD MANGOES!!! (making pickled mangoes)
Those 'raw' onions I used to eat like apples....weren't always the "Maui" onions either!
I miss tropical fruits more than anything else from my "childhood".

OOOOH...and let's not forget LYCHEE.....fresh from the tree! And not the green ones you get at the local asian market...those Thai ones. Nope...the plump, RED, prickly, juicy ones...fresh off the neighbor's tree! Oh...and the mountain apples. mmmmmm........

I hated cooked carrots!

I was a very picky eater as a child; drove my mom nuts. Now I'll eat just about anything, and get revenge on her when she comes to visit. She made me eat cooked carrots, now I feed her Thai food.

My Dad was in the Air Force and stationed in SE Asia back in his bachelor days. He likes what we eat (wife is celiac and can't eat gluten, so we eat mostly asian food). My mom gets to deal with what's for dinner, or she gets frozen chicken nuggets!

So far, she's been a good sport, no temper tantrums.

My kids will have seconds and thirds of panang kai or beef rendang, but freak out at Grandma's if they have to eat meatloaf.

when I was a little kid I would only eat carbs (bread, pasta, cake, cookies...) and I wouldn't touch meat (even though my mother is a pro chef and made great food)
now I rarely eat carbs and I eat lots of meat!

i was lucky to have food as a kid
but i guess that i would never of tried sushi then
so sushi it is

I was a horrible child, and couldn't stand anything with a squishy texture. Wityh my mom as a cook this included some things you wouldn't expect. I would throw up if forced to eat these foods. My dh eats everything, and one son is exactly like him. The other son is pickier, but not like I was.

Things I hated but now love
avocados
mushrooms
pumpkin pie
meat loaf (mom used bread as a filler, but didn't have a good concept of crumb so it had mushy bready bits in it)

cooked cabbage
chilli

Things I still won't eat
brussel sprouts, i.e. evil little cabbages from hell.
liver
cooked spinach, unless it is in things
certain kinds of fish
most veggies cooked by my mom

My brother thinks my sister and I are good cooks because mom was so bad. I think it is because we like food better. Mom: 5'11", 110lbs, me and sister plus-sized, but good cooks

I loved pretty much everything except asparagus, but I’m sure it was because all we ever had was canned squishy overcooked stuff. Now I LOVE fresh asparagus cooked properly!!!

I grew up NOT being forced to eat stuff, OR to clean my plate… though we had to take a taste of almost everything either new or semi-new. By a taste, I mean, a small helping… about three bites. If after a few tries, we still hated it we didn’t have to take it anymore, but there was always a suitable substitute as long as it was a veg. Meat, if we wouldn’t eat it, we did without. …heh, it was not politically correct at the time, (I’m OLD you guys, this was in the late 50’s through the 60’s) but now we know that skipping a serving of meat won’t kill us. My parents were ahead of their time!

As far as the cleaning the plate thing, we were told not to take more than we could eat, that if we wanted more there’d be seconds. (and there were) Needless to say, none of us have weight issues, well, maybe 5-10 lbs here and there, but not excessive issues.

Oh, now for some reason, I avoid cauliflower. I think it's the smell.
