i cut and pulled. I am really 'in love' with my girls, and would NEVER hurt them. It took a lot of guts to finally get to where i knew i needed to do something or i was going to loose her.
I soaked in epsom salt and water for 10 to 15 minutes, scrubbed off any dirt, mud, etc.
I sterilized every thing that i thought i would need to use, had my bandage already cut, tape already cut, etc.
scalple, scissors, tweezers, magnifying glass, etc.
I wrapped her in a clean light towel to keep her still.
Put her on her side on a towel so she would be soft.
I covered her head lightly with a paper towel so she couldnt see, but could still breath.
I took a HUGE breath to calm down.
I cut into the skin AROUND the outside of the bumble. It has to be deep enough to cut through the skin. Yes, it did bleed a little. I took a cotton ball in water and cleaned it off. She did squirm aruond a little only while i was cutting. It broke my heart, i knew it hurt, BUT what is the alternative? slow and painful death? I don't think to. ok, so it took about 2 to 3 minutes to cut around the bumble and i kept it clean with water and the cotton ball.
I took another HUGE BREATH. ok, can do. i started it keep going.
Underneath the Bumble scab looked like normal scare tissue skin. (I had no clue it was a hard pea sized thing attached to a yellow pea sized hard core. I wouldn't have believed it had it not popped out right at me. ) I started picking at it with really sharp tweezers. I got them in between the cut from my scalple and the bumble scab and tried to pull upward from her foot a little. It really did not move at all. I thought for sure it was just tissue and i was really hurting her. I remembered seeing to squeeze it or mush it around to loosen the tissue inside. So, I did that.
Squeezed and mushed her foot pad around to maybe loosen up things.
Went back to the tweezers and trying to pry under the bumble thing.
the darn thing just popped right out of her foot like a zit. Sorry for the gross terms, but that's what it looked like! It was hard as well. like a chunk of yellow misshapen gravel almost. There was no more blood after i did the initial cut as well and cleaned it with water. When it popped out it did leave a hole in her foot. Maybe 1/2 inch deep by 1/4 in across. It was a clean hole as well. I wiped the entire area off to make sure everything was clean and steril. I filled the hole with Neosporin, put a square of gauze the size of her foot pad on that. I take VetRap and cut it into strips the width of her toes and wrap the pad up nicely. She did not even flinch once i had done the initial cut. When i removed the plug, i swear you could hear her sigh with relief.
I wrapped her foot, took off the paper towel on her face, (boy did I get a look) picked her up, took off the towel and let her sit on my lap for a minute or so. She really seemed to be in no pain at all. She instantly was walking with NO limp at all. Of course I had to give her monsterous amounts of treats at my table for this.
that was last Friday morning. Sat. afternoon I checked her foot. Took off the bandage and gauze. Swelling was down, heat is gone. I wiped it down with water and let her sit on my lap for 5 to get some air to it. It started to look like a normal wound. I re-wrapped, re-gauze and re-neosporined. Sunday I did the same. She still has not limped at all, swelling is down 80% and she actually comes around me and got on my lap. (there's a first) I plan on keeping it wrapped and clean until the new wound scab is gone.
Once i realized that I was not 'killing her' with the knife, it was easy to do. I will definitly do it again if needed.
