For those that lock chickens in at night

Mrs. K :

You need a coop/run, my run is attached, and totally encloses the coop. I just leave the pop up door open, and they go in and out.

However, if you have not been locking them up, and have only lost one. I think that you can't have too many predators. Leave them food and water, and don't worry.

That's what we have and what I have been doing. For the life of me I can't figure out how a possum could have gotten in there. We have 48" "sheep" fencing as well as chicken wire skirt and also buried. All of the wires are still perfectly rectangular, there are no signs of digging. We've had chickens 2 1/2 years in fencing like this with nary a loss. AGain, I left the human door of the coop open but the coop is still fully within the run.

I thought that maybe the possum reached through the fence to grab a hen. The headless hen was about 18" from the fence line and I'm wondering if the "headless chicken effect" may have caused her to move a little more into the run.

DH said the hens were out, not in the coop when he was out and saw something going after them
