By all means switch - you'll save a fortune and I've read the plastic diapers NEVER decompose and will be in land fills, along with styrofoam containers, when the dinosaurs return. I used cloth diapers with my first two children (18 months apart) 28 years ago. I was a college student and couldn't afford Pampers. I also didn't have a washer/dryer so I would hand wash them in the tub, soaking them in bleach water first and stirring them with broom handle, then soapy wash and hang them out to dry.
If you can get past the yucky part of rinsing the poopy ones out in toilet first, and you have a washer/dryer the rest is a piece of cake.
However, don't do what I did and close yourself up in the bathroom with a tub full of bleach water and diapers and then start scrubbing them. I nearly passed out and was lucky to be able to crawl to the door.
