For those who eat their quails

Females are very easy to sell. Males are much harder.

Ok so I think that's my game plan. Pick a small group of females and sell the rest..maybe sell a male if anyone wants him or just eat them. Just like chickens. Same thing.

Oh yeah.. another question. I saw videos of people ripping the quail heads right off. Better this method or scissors? I was afraid scissors might get caught up on feathers so was contemplating the ripping head off. One better than the other?

It's a matter of preference. I prefer sharp shears because I'm not confident in ripping the head off quickly enough. Someone with larger hands than mine might prefer ripping the head off.

That's a good answer. These birds are much smaller than chickens. I've never had the nerve to dislocated a chicken neck by hand because I'm afraid I may not have the strength. I've always used the stick because it's very fast and no suffering. Maybe I should start with sharp shears to make sure the job gets done 1st go and then feel out if I'm strong enough to use my hands to remove the head.

When I was researching dispatch methods, I was actually more concerned that I'd have problems cutting heads off with shears. I could just imagine the bird jerking its head at just the wrong time. I decided to go with ripping the head off by hand and had no problem with that. I'm a 60 year old man, but it doesn't seem to take a lot of strength to just pop the head off. As long as you have a good grasp of the body with one hand and the head with the other, it's a piece of cake.

So another question.. As these quail are growing I realize I have too small of hands to be able to hold a quail very well in 1 hand. Anymore tips for people with small hands to dispatch quickly?

I have small hands. I have never had a problem holding the wings close to the body and using shears, but if you're concerned you could wrap the bird in a dish towel to keep it from flopping around.
